Log for July 2006

We bought Zoetke on Ebay of all things! Having paid out an average of 600 to 700 for a weeks sailing once a year,
Liz and I thought it would be a good idea to get ourselves our own boat! Zoetke is a clinker built wooden sloop built in 1962.
She was berthed in Hartlepool so Liz and I planned to drive up on the Friday night to sort out the paperwork and get
her ready to sail down to Great Yarmouth. We planned on it taking us 48 hours, with stops at Scarborough and Grimsby.

Friday

We finally arrived at Hartlepool marina at about 7:30pm, with the rain bucketing down! Talk about Noah and the Ark!
We met up with Ian Hunter, the owner, and he showed us around (didn't take long as it is a small boat!)

Zoetke was a lovely looking old lady but sorely in need of a bit of TLC. Probably the most disconcerting thing was that she leaked quite a bit!
As we had planned to stay on her overnight Liz was quite keen to identify the dry bunk! As it happened, she guessed wrong and I had the driest night!

Saturday

Early morning we awoke to cry of seagulls and yes pouring rain! Ah well, we had come prepared and it was going to take more than a little rain to put us off. I got chatting to a local guy who was getting ready to go fishing. He was a bit concerned that his wife might be sea sick as it was getting rough out to sea.
He went off anyway......and was back 20 mins later! Turned out it was quite lumpy with 6-7 foot waves.
He advised me to wait until later, which I was quite happy to do!
Even more so when I found out he was lifeboatman! So we decided to wait until the afternoon tide and see if the weather improved.
At least we had a bit more time to look over the boat and check we had everything we needed.

In the afternoon, the weather did improve a bit, so we cast off and went through the Hartlepool lock gates.
As we got out into the open water, a dolphin decided to pop up and have a quick look to ensure we were seaworthy!
Obviously he (or she) was satisfied and went off on other more pressing business. We set course for Scarborough
but soon realised that that we wouldn't make it before dark - so Whitby seemed the best bet.
The bonus in this plan was that Whitby makes the best fish and chips in the known universe! We arrived at Whitby after dark
and I was a little concerned that the bridge was not manned (it's a lifting bridge and only opens 2hrs either side of HW!)

Upshot was that we tied up alongside a fishing boat hoping it wasn't planning to be off too early next day.
All in all, it was a good introduction to Zoetje - she sailed really well and made us feel quite secure.

Sunday

As luck would have it, the following day saw us beating into a real SW, plus a foul tide. Bad planning on my part.
We ended up going back in to Whitby as it took us 5 hours to cover 5 miles! The return journey took less than an hour!

Leaving Whitby - Finally!
