The Things We Tell Our Children
Now, I don't have any children of my own, but some of the things that people tell their children, I think is not good for them.  For one thing, why on Earth would an adult tell a poor little child that if they swallow a watermelon seed that a whole watermelon will grow in their stomach?  That's horrible!  I can't tell you how many years went by where I was afraid to eat watermelon because I thought my stomach would explode from accidentally swallowing a seed.
And is it wise to tell our children there's a tooth fairy and Easter rabbit when they'll find out that we've been lying to them all those years?  I think telling them that there's a Santa is okay.  It makes Christmas seem more magical.
One thing that I really don't believe in doing is giving a child false hope.  My parents told me all of my life that if I went to school that I could go to any college I want when I graduated.  They told me that all through high school too.  So when I tell them that I want to go to USM my first year of college, they freak out and say that they can't afford me starting my college career at a four-year university.  I mean, what did they think?  I would just FORGET that they told me I could go where I want my ENTIRE life.  I think that is probably the worst thing to do to a child.  It's like dangling Disney World at them for 12 years then saying "You will never go there."  This rant is a short one, but I hope it makes my point
