Trevor Reznik, played by a hardly recognisable Christian Bale (who lost over 65lbs to play the Character of Reznik) has not slept for over a year. Ravaged by fatigue, his body is little more than a bag of bones.
Wracked by exhaustion, his weary mind increasingly plays tricks on him. Then one fateful day at the machine shop where he works, he's involved in a grusome accident, and a fellow worker loses an arm.
Cryptic 'post-it' notes appear in his apartment - playing hangman throughout the film as you follow in the footsteps of Reznik as he tries to uncover the truth.
The film allows you to keep pace with Reznik, and indeed at the end of the film you realise that all the clues were there right from the beginning, cryptic enough however to keep you glued to your screen, until the end of the film where you are rewarded for journeying with Reznik through a nightmarish world, by revealing the truth.
A very clever film, using attention to detail and many cryptic set pieces, many of which you might miss on a first viewing. This might be off-putting to some. However if you pay attention to detail whilst watching, the end result is so much more satisfying. I like this film, it's dark, un-nerving & nightmarish - and for an actor to go through so much agony to make a film so realistic, the film deserves to be watched and admired.
