" No Children, No Future, No hope. In the year 2027, eighteen years since the last baby was born, disillusioned Theo (Clive Owen) becomes an unlikely champion of the human race when he is asked by his former lover Julian (Julianne Moore) to escort a young pregnant woman out of the country as quickly as possible. In a thrilling race against time, Theo will risk everything to deliver the miracle the whole world has been waiting for."
" Co-Starring Michael Caine, filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron's highly acclaimed Children of Men received three Academy Award nominations, including best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography."
Children of Men is a bleak vision into the not too distant future, set in the UK the breakdown of society, social unrest, refugee prison camps, and riotous factions are quite unnerving (all of the graphic, almost documentary style scenes in the film are happening all around the world today) though seeing them condensed together in the UK brings home the awful truth that it could happen sooner than we think. The film set in 2027, shows the despair of the people who have been infertile for 18 years with no future. One pregnant woman could be their only hope, but the race is on for her to escape with her baby alive. The director and cinematographer have done a great job in creating a believable but totally depressing insight into the future (a future that is now for some people) and you end up with a sence of guilt almost for our ignorance to the rest of the world, we see these things on our TV screens daily on the news, but then turn back to our relatively easy and 'safe' lives. It's a great film, thought provoking and brilliantly made. Unfortunately though the film only leaves you with a faint glimmer of hope for the future - but not enough to make you have faith in the human race.
