DVD cover for Casino Royale
"Casino Royale introduces James Bond before he holds his license to kill. But Bond is no less dangerous, and with two professional assassinations in quick succession, he is elevated to '00' status. 'M' (Judi Dench). head of the British Secret Service, sends the newly promoted 007 on his first mission that takes him to Madagascar, the Bahamas and eventually leads him to Montenegro to face Le Chiffre, a ruthless financier under threat from his terrorist cliantele, who is attempting to restore his funds in a high stakes poker game at the Casino Royale. 'M' places Bond (Daniel Craig) under the watchful eye of the Treasury official Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave the danger together. Le Chiffre's cunning and cruelty come to bear on them both in a way Bond could never imagine, and he learns his most important lesson. Trust no one."
To be honest I've never been a big fan of James Bond, it's just not my cup of tea. Has this film made me a Bond fan ? Well no, infact this film didn't seem like a Bond film at all, not a bad thing, the film is enjoyable enough - not sure what the die-hard James Bond fans think either.
Daniel Craig in great shape has undeniable charisma as the new 'blonde bond', however the film takes its self too seriously with little apparrent wit to the script, amongst some outrageous stunts. It's still a great and enjoyable movie, and perhaps because I've never watched a 'Bond' movie all the way through before perhaps some of the subtle script that pays homage to previous Bond films was lost on me.
Judi Dench as 'M' is well cast, and Eva Green who played Vesper Lynd added some eye candy for the boys, Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) who crys blood and keeps a poker face throughout plays a good villain. The film is a good stand alone Bond. It wont make you a fan of Bond films but good looking Daniel Craig might just pull enough fans in if they were to make another.
