Raiders of the Lost Ark (Atari 2600)
Walk off the Flying Saucer Mesa and drop the Chai. The Yar from Yar's
Revenge will appear.
Ridge Racer (PSX)
You play a mini version of Galaxian while the game is loading (kill all the
Galaxians to unlock hidden cars!) - Submitted by Dire 51
Ridge Racer Revolution (PSX)
Same as Ridge Racer, but this time it's a mini version of Galaga '88. -
Submitted by Dire 51
River City Ransom (NES)
The "Dragon Twins" bosses are a Double Dragon reference, and their theme
music is the title music from Double Dragon.
RoboTrek (SNES)
The computer in the hero's house gives you an advertisement for ActRaiser 2
and Illusion of Gaia when you turn it on.
The computer used to make robots is a giant Super Famicom controller.
The Count has a lot of names, and one of them is "Belmont". It might be a
Castlevania homage, since RoboTrek was made by Enix and Castlevania was made by
Konami.
Turbo the dog makes yet another appearance in an Enix game. He's located in
Rococo town next to the Mayor's office. - Submitted by Bomberguy221
Many Enix games have the "Phoenix" as the ultimate power. Well, in Robotrek,
the strongest sword shoots out a Phoenix. (See under ActRaiser 2 for more info.)
The planet "Quintenix" is an obvious reference to Quintet and Enix, the
developers of the game.
Dr. Einst is a reference to Albert Einstein.
Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis)
The "Pulsating Plasma Blaster" on stage 5 is a take on the Gradius boss. -
Submitted by Deathspork
The platforms on stage 2 that are behind and in front of the waterfall were
also featured in the Konami SNES game, Legend of the Mystical Ninja. - Submitted
by Deathspork
The stage 6 boss is a take on the next-to-last boss of Bucky O'Hare. -
Submitted by Deathspork
R-Type (Multiple Platforms)
The first boss (the Krell aka Double Keradops aka Gladiator aka
Doppelganger, etc.) resembles the alien from the Alien movies.
R-Type 2 (Multiple Platforms)
The Alien-esque Krell is back, but now its covered in armor and called the
"Subatom" or "Zabtom". You can blow away its mask to reveal its face, though.
R-Type 3 (SNES/GBA)
And yet another appearance of the Alien-inspired Krell as a boss!
R-Type Delta (PSX)
The Level 4 Boss has the same type of semi-circle laser beams that the Level
1 Boss of Image Fight has. - Submitted by Crawl and 1000
The Alien-like Krell is back as a boss in this game, too.
SaGa Frontier (PSX)
The group that Emelia joins is called "Gradius" and the ZEKE mech bears a
resemblance to the Vic Viper. This might be a homage of some kind, since SaGa
was made by Squaresoft and Gradius was made by Konami.
The ThunderDragon enemy is the Mana Beast from Secret of Mana.
The Axebeak enemy was also originally a boss in Secret of Mana.
Sailor Moon (Multiplatform)
I have 6 Sailor Moon video games, 5 of which have their original packaging(boxes or jewel case), and each of the packages has a sticker on it with Pero's head. Toei Animation, of course, is the company that worked on the Sailor Moon anime in Japan, so I believe Pero is Toei's mascot. - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
FO's Note: Speaking of Pero and Toei Animation, my boyfriend (Crawl and 1000) and I were watching old Transformers cartoons one day, and we saw that Toei Animation worked on some of them. For those episodes, that same picture of Pero's head appeared during the end credits!!
San Francisco Rush (PSX)
Rampage: World Tour or something is advertised on a billboard in the PSX version of San Francisco Rush, if you're desparate enough to play such a stinker of a game. - Submitted by HonestGamer
Saturday Night Slam Masters (Multiplatform)
In Saturday Night Slam Masters, I can think of 3 besides the obvious appearance of Metro City mayor Mike Haggar from Final Fight (who happens to be my fave in the game). Chun Li can be found in the audience, as well as, I've been told, Ryu and E. Honda from Street Fighter 2 (I have seen Chun Li and Ryu, but E. Honda I'm not sure if I've seen or not - I think I have, but it's hard to tell). Also, Gunloc's profile says that he is rumored to be related to a famous street fighter. Hmm... let's see... the hair looks familiar, plus he has a move called the sonic fist... sounds like Guile to me. And lastly, when Biff Slamkovich (Biff Bolshevik in the arcade game) is beaten in a 1-on-1 match, he says, "Comrade Zangief was right - you all fight cheap". - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
Saturn Bomberman (Saturn)
Higgins from the Adventure Island series is in there as is Milon from
Milon's Secret Castle. They're in the game's Battle Mode. - Submitted by Yoichi
Saturn Bomberman has Bonk in the battle mode in addition to Higgins and
Milon. - Submitted by Yashiro Nanakase
Secret of Evermore (SNES)
There are characters from Final Fantasy 3(6j) in the audience when the
announcer is speaking right before fighting Vigor.
Cecil from Final Fantasy 2(4j) is in the town of Ebon Keep, and he says he
lives there with his wife, Rosa, who is also from FF2(4j).
One of the items you can trade for at the marketplace is a Chocobo Egg.
Secret of Mana (SNES)
The bald guy at the top of the lighthouse is named "Pecard". Could this
possibly be a reference to Captain Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation?
The "Face on Mars" that was used on the moon in Final Fantasy 4 is hidden in
the ocean at the top right-hand corner of the map.
Shadow Man (Multiple Platforms)
Musical Cameo: The music that plays during the opening sequence and in the
London Station is Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata".
Shenmue (Dreamcast)
This game is LOADED with cameos... mostly in the form of small toys that you
get from the vending machines. Characters and items from such games as Fantasy
Zone, Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter, Sonic The Hedgehog, Galaxy Force,
NiGHTS, and (I believe) Alex Kidd, among other games, show up in the vending
machines. The main theme music from After Burner, Outrun, Space Harrier and
Hang-On can also be won in the form of cassettes in the convenience store
raffles. For that matter, Hang-On and Space Harrier themselves - the full arcade
games! - are in the You Arcade. You can also play them in your Saturn (yes, the
Saturn itself makes a cameo!) if you win them in the raffles. - Submitted by
Dire 51
SimCity (SNES)
Bowser is a natural disaster.
You can get Mario Statues for accomplishing some goals.
Freeland is in the shape of Mario's face.
Smash Court Tennis 2/Anna Kournikova Tennis (PSX)
In the Exhibition mode a Splatterhouse building can be seen in the
background. - Submitted by Dire 51
Snake Rattle n Roll (NES)
The floors of one of the levels spell out "GAMEBOY" in huge letters
(originally pointed out to me by Fenrir of Fenrir's Sprite Domain).
Musical Cameo: The title theme music is "Shake, Rattle and Roll".
Snatcher (Multiple Platforms)
Snatcher for the Sega CD, MSX, Saturn, PSX, etc. borrows HEAVILY from
Blade Runner. Gillian Seed looks a lot like Harrison Ford, and Random
Hajile is the spitting image of Rutger Hauer. ^_^ - Submitted by Yashiro
Nanakase
Also, the SNATCHERS look just like Terminator exoskeletons. - Submitted by
Yashiro Nanakase
Your sidekick throughout the game is a miniature version of Metal Gear known
as "Metal Gear MK-II" and the Outer Heaven Club has lots of Konami cameos: Bill
& Lance from Contra, Sparkster from Rocket Knight Adventures, Simon Belmont &
Dracula, and Goemon (The Mystical Ninja). In the MSX version these were various
sci-fi characters such as Yoda. - Submitted by Yashiro Nanakase
Solomon's Key (NES)
There's a way to make Mighty Bomb Jack appear in one of the rooms.
Soul Blazer (SNES)
This was the first Enix game I know of to have the "Phoenix" as the ultimate
power. (See under ActRaiser 2 for more info.)
Star Fox 64 (N64)
ROB64 is based on the NES R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy). - Submitted by
Crawl and 1000
The giant, black UFO in that one level where you help Bill the Dog's
squadron was inspired by the big alien ship in the movie "Independence Day". The
game's manual even implies it, stating that Andross stole the technology for the
ship from an Alien race. If you don't beat the UFO in time, it blows up the
structure in the middle of the planet in the exact same way that the UFOs in
"Independence Day" blew up the White House.
During the credits, the Star Fox
team marches in front of the Cornerian Army saluting,
much like the ending of the first Star Wars movie. - Submitted by Bomberguy221
StarTropics (NES)
Navcom is the R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy).
Hmm...so your uncle is an archaeologist named Dr. Jones? Now here have I heard that before? :)
In StarTropics (NES) you hear a part of the English anthem 'God saves the Queen' when Captain Bell's ship is sinking. - Submitted by Ruudos
Street Fighter 2 (Arcade & Various Consoles)
M. Bison was originally modeled after Mike Tyson, and the names of the 3
special fighters were changed around in the U.S. release to avoid copyright
infringement. M. Bison became Balrog, Balrog became Vega, and Vega became M.
Bison. - Submitted by Deathspork
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Multiplatform)
And finally, in Street Fighter Alpha 2 and 3, in Guy's level, several Final Fight characters can be seen. The ones I noticed the most are Haggar, Andore, and Poison or Roxy, I'm not sure which (they are the female characters in the arcade game of Final Fight who were replaced by Billy and Sid in the US SNES version). - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Multiplatform)
See Street Fighter Alpha 2 for more info.
Strider 2 (PSX)
One of the bonus icons you can pick up for extra points is actually Son Son,
from the early Capcom arcade game of the same name. The other bonus icons have
also appeared in earlier Capcom games (the barrel, the cow, the star, the
robot and the Yashishi). - Submitted by Dire 51
Stunt Race FX (SNES)
Star Fox Arwings fly overhead on one course.
There are huge billboards with Mario faces on them.
Super C (NES)
Once again, we have the Alien references here! In Stage 7, the "pods" that
produce those Facehugger/Scorpion things look like the eggs in the Alien movies.
Some of the enemies on the final stage look similar to Alien, also.
Super Dodge Ball (NES)
In Super Dodge Ball, at least 2 songs from Renegade (NES and arcade) are used the game's soundtrack. When starting a match, the game plays Renegade's start of level theme. In addition, when a player wins the match, the game plays Renegade's end of level theme. I believe also, that Super Dodge Ball's theme for a cpu controlled player winning a match is the game over theme from Renegade, and that the ending theme for Super Dodge Ball is a revamped version of Renegade's end of game (played upon beating game) theme. Also, the song that plays during bean ball mode is a revamped version of the NES Renegade's song where you fight inside the subway train. - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
Superman (NES)
Kemco/Seika apparently had a Christian programmer - in Superman for NES, when you leave the office of the Daily Planet, if you go back later to get a password, the song being played is, "Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus", a classic hymn. - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES/SNES/GBA)
Musical Cameo: The original Super Mario Bros. theme plays in Subspace.
You can get Yoshi eggs which later hatch into Yoshis in the GBA version
only.
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES/SNES)
The warp whistle is actually an item from The Legend of Zelda. They play the
same tune and they both summon a whirlwind.
Musical Cameo: The music box plays the original Super Mario Bros. theme.
Ludwig von Koopa was probably named after Ludwig von Beethoven, and Morton
Koopa Jr. may have been named after Morton Downey Jr.
Super Mario Land (Gameboy)
Musical Cameo: The invincibility theme is the "Can-Can".
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
Link appears in a bed at the Rose Town Inn.
Samus Aran appears in a bed at the Mushroom Kingdom Castle. She also appears as a toy in Booster's toybox.
There are models of Star Fox Arwings and F-Zero cars in Hinopio's Inn at the Barrel Volcano.
The "Kong" enemy looks like Donkey Kong, and one of the rooms in Bowser's
Keep is set up like the old Donkey Kong arcade game.
The Axem Rangers are a reference to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
(In Final Fantasy 6) there is a dummied monster called CzarDragon (sometimes translated Czar Weapon), and there exists an enemy of the same name in Super Mario RPG. - Submitted by Yoichi
Final Fantasy 4's boss music plays as you fight Culex, an optional boss. -
Submitted by Yoichi
There's a boy in the Mushroom Kingdom playing a Gameboy. You can later buy
this item from him to play the Beetle game.
Talk about obscure references! The first major boss you fight is a small sword named "Mack". This is a possible reference to the classic Louis Armstrong song, "Mack the Knife"!
Super Mario World (SNES)
In Super Mario World for the SNES, if you stay on the special star road level select screen for about two minutes you will hear the NES Mario Brothers music but with steel drums as the instruments. - Submitted by Hussein
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Some of the levels have these very Arkanoid-inspired blocks that you have to
break through. I even have a picture of this one! (Thanks to Crawl and 1000 for
help with this one.)
Yoshi's Island/Arkanoid Pic
Super Metroid (SNES)
As stated in the sections for Metroid and Metroid 2, much of the idea of
Metroid seems inspired by the "Alien" movies. Ridley, who's possibly named after
director Ridley Scott and looks somewhat Alien-like, is back in this game, too.
Super NES Super Scope 6 (SNES)
On the LazerBlazer game with the rockets, get a high score, and Mario and a
Koopaling will fly by on rockets.
Super Ninja Boy (SNES)
Rick, from Flying Warriors, is a character in the town of Horizon Gate, and
the music in this town is the main theme of Flying Warriors.
Princess Scheherazade, from The Magic of Scheherazade, is in the town of
Celestern. Celestern was also the name of the first world in Magic of
Scheherazade, and the music in Super Ninja Boy's Celestern is the town music
from TMoS.
Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN)
On the Big Blue
battle course, the cars pass by a pole with a picture
of dolphins on it. The GCN's former name was "Project:
Dolphin". - Submitted by Bomberguy221
And, as Yoichi once said, this game is basically one big cameo...
Super Spike V'Ball (NES)

There's also a guy named 'Will', who's the inventor of the airplane

bit like each other too. - Submitted by Ruudos
'Columbus' is also in this game and is of course a reference to
Christopher Columbus, a navigator and explorer. - Submitted by Ruudos
There is also a guy named 'Temjin' in the game. This is probably a

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)
There's a Kid Dracula head item hidden on the side of the HoroHoro Temple in the first town.
The arcade house has the first level of Gradius. - Submitted by Crawl and
1000
The purple haired long eared (or are those horns?) girl that appears on the televisions in the arcades to ask you what game you want to play is none other than Konami Girl, costar of the Famicom game Wai Wai world. - Submitted by Dire 51
The Legend of Zelda (NES)
The currency of all the Zelda games, the rupee, is also found on Clu Clu Land. - Submitted by Shadow Villgust
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
Mario's head appears in paintings on walls.
There are Chain Chomps from Super Mario Bros. 3 in Turtle Rock Dungeon.
Possible Wizard of Oz reference: The sign that's next to the sleeping man in the desert says, "Pay no attention to the man sleeping by this sign", which is a lot like the line near the end of the Wizard of Oz where the Wizard says, "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"
There is a very well-hidden secret room with the name Chris Houlihan written on a wall tile. He is the winner of a Nintendo Power contest to have his name featured in a game. - Submitted by Kairobi King
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GameBoy)
Goombas and Pirahna Plants from the Super Mario Bros. games appear in the
underground tunnels that connect areas of the dungeons. Added by Black Jack (Mike Waters): Interestingly enough, while the goombas can be killed by the sword or other methods, stomping them will give you a heart. Hmm... where have we seen that tactic before? ^_-
Bowwow, the dog in Mabe Village, is a Chain Chomp from Super Mario Bros. 3.
Mr. Write is Dr. Wright from the SNES version of SimCity.
The picture that the Goat Lady sends to Mr. Write is a picture of Princess

The man in the henhouse arguably looks like Luigi.
There's an enemy in one of the palaces that looks like Kirby, and it even
tries to inhale you.
The Frog King that teaches you the "Frog Song of Soul" is Wart from Super
Mario Bros. 2/Doki Doki Panic.
If you throw magic powder on one of those enemies that looks like a dancing pickle, it changes form, and if you talk to it, it says something like, "It can display hundreds of polygons", which might either be a reference to the Super FX Chip or the N64 (if the N64 was in development at the time Link's Awakening was made.)
In the crane game, you can get a Yoshi Doll as a prize. - Submitted by Codie Martin
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
You play the song "The Ballad of the Wind Fish" in the milk
bar. The song title comes from Link's Awakening. - Submitted by Bomberguy221
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
There are pictures of Mario and other characters from the Mario games behind a window in Hyrule Castle Courtyard.
Talon and Ingo look like Mario and Luigi. Malon might possibly be based on
Princess Toadstool (Peach).
Malon is wearing a Bowser-head brooch.
The old rich fat woman with the dog in the 64 and GBC games is clearly based on the dog-owning Madame MeowMeow from the orginal GB game, Link's Awakening. - Submitted by Aaron Campbell
Likewise, Malon and Talon of 64 and GBC Zelda games are clearly based on
Marin and Tarin of Link's Awakening - I'm not even sure why they bothered to
rename them, the characters are so alike in every way (Malon - young girl, crush on Link, sings; Talon - her lazy father, sleeps all the time.) - Submitted by Aaron Campbell
The Three Stooges (NES/Amiga)
The game begins with the The Three Stooges walking out onto the Ghostbusters 2 logo.
3 Stooges, Amiga version: The stooges walk out onto a Defender of the Crown logo. - Submitted by Yashiro Nanakase

Speed-ups are a pair of orange shoes with the Nike swoosh on them. - Submitted by Deathspork
At the end of General Ahkboob's first speech, it sounds like he says "I'll buy YOU for a dollar", which may be a spin on the saying "I'd buy that for a dollar". - Submitted by Deathspork

In Tuff E Nuff for SNES, there are several references to other Jaleco games in the top scores table. B.Loaded (Bases Loaded), B.Brothers (Brawl Brothers), R.Turf (Rival Turf), Goal! Wacky Worlds (Genesis)
The Genesis game Wacky Worlds has cameos by Sonic, Tails, Toejam &
Earl. - Submitted by Yashiro Nanakase
Wai Wai World (Famicom)

Characters from other Konami games that appear in this include include Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Goemon from the Goemon games, Fuuma from Getsu Fuumaden, the Vic Viper from Gradius, Mikey from Goonies, Twinbee and Dr. Cinnamon from the Twinbee games, Moai from Moai Kun and King Kong from the MSX 2 and Famicom King Kong games. And of course, this game is where Konami Man and Konami Girl came from. - Submitted by Dire 51

Possibly a stretch: there are apes who wield hammers who look somewhat like
the oldschool Donkey Kong - and they hammer away in the same way that Mario did
in the original arcade Donkey Kong. - Submitted by Aaron Campbell
Wipeout (Multiplatform)
Billboard mania, part 4! Psygnosis jumped on the advertising bandwagon by placing billboards for several of their PSX games throughout the game (ex: Krazy Ivan). - Submitted by Dire 51
Wonder Dog (Sega CD)
This is the oddest cameo yet, imo. I picked up a video cassette cleaner a year or so back and popped it in my VCR to clean it. Who should appear onscreen but Wonder Dog, hero of the obscure first generation Sega CD game Wonder Dog, holding a giant brush! He then proceeded to clean off the entire screen, while a Japanese woman said "When Wonder Dog with stop mark plate appears, push stop button". I guess Wonder Dog's been having a hard time finding work ever since Victor Musical Industries let him go back in '92 after his game tanked... - Submitted by Dire 51
Xenogears (PSX)
Lucca from Chrono Trigger makes a cameo appearance.
Another cameo for Xenogears is that the three sages of Shevat are named
Belthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar. Same as in CT. - Submitted by Tom Otting
Xybots (Arcade)
Xybots is supposedly a homage to the classic arcade/Atari game, Berzerk. (Thanks to Prime Op and Dire 51 for info on this one.)
Yars Revenge (Atari 2600)
This is a commonly-known secret code for this game. Destroy the Swirl in
mid-air then stay on the lower-half of the solid vertical line during the
explosion. The initials "HSWWSH" will appear, which is a reference to the game's
programmer Howard Scott Warshaw.
Zanac (NES)
If you beat the game, press A & B on Controllers 1 & 2 after the fairy stops moving during the end credits. The message, "See you again in Guardic" will appear. Guardic is an MSX shooter also made by Compile.
The level 6 boss is made up of tiles that spell out "GUARDIC". Screenshot
In level 6, there are floor tiles that spell out "COMPILE", the name of the company that made Zanac. Screenshot
Zero Divide (PSX)
There is a hidden game called Tiny Phalanx. It is a 3 level game that plays just like Phalanx on the SNES, with original stages and even its own invincibility cheat. - Submitted by Deathspork
Zero Wing (Multiplatform)
The design of the ship you control
(the infamous ZIG that you may remember from the "All Your
Base..." fad) seems to have been inspired (or directly taken)
from Toaplan's earlier shooter Truxton. The very first enemy
ships you encounter do look a lot like ZIGs. - Submitted by Dire 51
Truxton Pic Zero Wing Pic
Zillion (SMS)
Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone puts in an appearance here. - Submitted by Dire 51
Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics 2 (NES)
You collect tetrads, or Tetris pieces. - Submitted by Deathspork
As Mike travels through time, he meets many famous historical people, both
real and fictitious, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Cleopatra, Sherlock Holmes, and
King Arthur. (Thanks to Crawl and 1000 for some help on this one.)
When you have to go get the pizza for Cleopatra, the guy with the pizza is
riding a Koopa Troopa. - Submitted by Codie Martin
There's a boss in Zoda's Revenge that looks like the first boss from
Blaster Master only without the tentacles and orbiting blobs. - Submitted by Codie Martin
When you deliver the pizza to Cleopatra, notice the bottom of the box after she finishes the pizza: Caesar's Hut. Hmm... a cross between Little Caesar's and Pizza Hut perhaps, or just a tribute to Pizza Hut with a little Roman twist? You decide. - Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters)
