Other Things Worthy of Your Time
Untitled Post on Nomar's Trade

This is disgusting. This is
when you forget how you could enjoy this BS they call a game. I'm done believing
professional sports could ever be respectable and innocent ever again. I've
wanted to look at these players through the eyes of a child but this has done
it. It's time to grow up.
There's no heart with something like this. So what if it's business. So what if
these guys are professionals. There's sure as hell a lot of people looking out
past the flashing lights and 'elite' level of play that's evidently worth
billions of dollars a year: the people who'd like to believe it's innocent
entertainment that's still respectable, the kind that puts a smile on the face
of people that call themselves fans.

Nomar is gone, Caberea is in.
Face the light that he's gone.
You don't just 'face the
light', whatever that means. You don't just move on. This was Nomar frigging
Garciaparra, the Boston Red Sock, and one of the few type of players like
that left in the game. How about you forget about stats and wins and losses for
a minute (because last time I checked, great *stats* didn't win us a World
Series last year, and Boston's 0-2 since that one player's been gone), and
remember what it's like to have a role model, or look up to somebody, or become
attached to somebody, regardless of how well he's done or how much better other
guys around him may be doing. Boston baseball's been about cheering for
whoever's hot, and booing for whoever's not, at any given time, but I can't
remember a time when people didn't at least love Nomar, even if he was going on
a worthless streak in the playoffs.
And we got Cabrerea too? I wonder if he can handle a cut-off.
All I know is that this might have been a little bit different had Nomar left of
his own accord. The way it sounds, he wasn't gonna go so easy. You want
business? Well isn't hardballing and acting like you're going to have to do a
better job of pleasing me to keep me a way og negotiating?
I never looked up to Nomar, and especially not lately, because of the fact he's
just another big shot ball player, but there was a time when he was the reason I
became a fan, and watched it oblivious of the politics and *business*. I'd like
to bet there are plenty of kids that were still watching just as innocently a
couple days ago.
"Where's Nomar Dad?"
"He's a Chicago Cub now m'boy. He got traded."
"Traded? Like baseball cards?"
"No, like how we got Schilling. These are real people we're talking about.
There's a difference."
"Oh, so he went to Chicago to help them win a championship."
"Haha, you've always been able to make me laugh. I guess you could look it like
that. ... Actually...I need to be honest with you, and need to tell you
something. You should know how this sort of thing happened."
"What is it, Dad?"
"He got 'screwed' son."
"Nomar got 'screwed'!?"
"It's okay though, because there were plenty of people that thought he was going
to 'screw' us too."
"No! Nomar wouldn't do that..."
"Eh, who knows if he really was. But even if he wasn't, why take that risk? It's
not a game of bases and balls anyway, it's a game of balls, and everybody's got
to show who's got the bigger ones."
"Huh?"
"Now then, let's talk about STDs."
"STDs? Are those a new kind of drugs? Some of my friends have been doing those
at school, and I've been thinking about trying them out, but I just wasn't
sure."
"Well, that's probably not a good idea. Aren't there any other things you could
be doing instead?"
"Just baseball season."
"Psh. Drugs you say? Go for it."
Or, in so many words.
When they were trying to trade for Rodriguez, it was all about kicking Nomar out
to make way. When New York did get him, what happened to Jeter? Oh that's
right, he's still at short, and still one of the most respected men in the city,
and not because he's won a championship in the last three years either. So much
for ownership aiming to 'please the fans'.
I'll never say 'we' in regards to the Red Sox again. Go Cubs is right.
Oh, wait. I said I could never love any other team than Boston, and I was being
honest. I guess I'll just go find something else to set my heart on.
Like...girls. I love girls. The only thing better than girls is, well, a lot of
girls.
I bet Nomar loved girls too. Maybe he wasn't too bad of a role model after all.”
NOTES
It's August 23rd, the Sox are 5 1/2 games back, and closing fast, and Nomar's playing with a cool group of players. I'm fine with it now.
