![]() As the students entered, they noticed their desks were still arranged in a large circle as they had been at the previous lesson. In the center of the circle was a large white cloth. After everyone was seated in the circle, the professor went inside the circle. The professor held a bag of runes in her hands. Written on the board at the front of the classroom were the words Casting on the Ground. After all of the students had taken their seats in the circle, Professor Rose began the lesson. "For this lesson we will be doing something a little different. You won't need your runes for this class. You will only need your textbooks, to take notes, and to observe what I do with runes in this circle." The professor went to the center of the circle of desks and sat on the white cloth. The students looked around, a bit confused at this due to the classroom being set up for a practical lesson. "Today we will be learning about another Runecasting method called Casting on the Ground. This method is very different from the other runecasting methods that we have learned about in our previous lessons. Instead of stones, it uses something different. Can anyone tell me what is used? Ellie?" Rose called on a Slytherin girl as she talked with another girl. "What?", Ellie asked as she turned her head toward the Professor. "Well, if you had been paying attention, Ellie, instead of talking with your friend..", the professor said angrily, "Five points from Slytherin. Now, do you know what this method uses instead of stones?" Ellie paused a moment to think, "Instead of runestones, this method of runecasting uses what are called Rune-tines. Rune-tines can be popsicle sticks with the rune symbols painted on them". She sighed in frustration and boredom. "That is correct, Ellie", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin, however, you stay after class for detention. Now, can anyone explain how the runes are casted and read? Ellie?" "Yes, Professor", Ellie replied, "You have 24 rune-tines and cast them all onto the ground or cloth. You don't have to shake them first, like the stones. You read the runes which land upright, in the positions in which they land. Their relative positions give their relations. For instance, if two upright runes are close or touching and lying nearly parallel, then the runes are related. If they cross, then they are in opposition. There are obviously many degrees of this, and you also have to consider groups of runes, and ones which are far away, and the general direction. This technique relies heavily on intuition, since it doesn't have a spread to lay the runes in, like tarot would use. Between 4 and 8 runes generally land upright, which is about right for most inquiries". Ellie glared at the Professor. "Very good, Ellie", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin. Who would like to volunteer to show us how this method is done?" Many hands went up, but Professor Rose chose Fievel of Hufflepuff. He went to the center of the circle and stood by Professor Rose. She handed him the bag of Rune-tines as she stated, "As you can see we have some sticks with the rune symbols on them". Fievel took the bag of rune-tines and tossed them onto the cloth. The class looked closer at the sticks as they landed. Many landed upside down with the rune symbol hidden, but five had landed upright. "Thank you, Fievel", Rose smiled, "You may return to your seat". Fievel did so without hesitation. "Now you read the symbols as Ellie told us earlier in the lesson", Rose glanced at the clock. "That is all for today", Rose said as homework parchments appeared on the students' desks, "For your homework I'd like you to practice this method and the homework parchment. Be sure to bring your homework to our next class". The bell rang as the students gathered their belongings and proceeded to their next class. Ellie of Slytherin reported to Professor Rose's desk for her detention. Featured in this lesson were Slytherin_pureblood3 (Ellie) of Slytherin and Judy187 (Fievel) of Hufflepuff who had requested to be featured in the lessons. HOMEWORK: 1. What method of runecasting did we talk about today? (5 hp) We talked about the method called "Casting on the Ground". 2. What is the name of the runes that are only used for this method? (5 hp) The name of the runes that are used are called "Rune-tines" and are used instead of stones. 3. What are they made of? (5 hp) Rune-tines can be popsicle sticks with the rune symbols painted on them. 4. Explain how this method of runecasting is done and how the runes are read. (5 hp) You have 24 rune-tines and cast them all onto the ground or cloth. Between 4 and 8 runes generally land upright, which is about right for most inquiries. EXTRA CREDIT: For an optional extra 10 hp, explain the two factors that stand out to you about this method of runecasting. I received good answers here from the two students who did the Extra Credit. |
