LESSON 42

Futhark Layout

After the students had taken their seats and prepared themselves for class, Professor Rose smiled at them, "Good morning, class. You all did well on the previous lesson even though it was a bit confusing. The method we will be talking about today will be less confusing. Everyone get ready to take notes and turn your textbooks to Chapter 42."
After she noted everyone was ready, the professor began the lesson. "Today class we will be talking about another complex runecasting method called the Futhark Layout.

The professor waved her wand and a drawing appeared on the board:

"Can anyone tell me about this layout?", Rose asked as she pointed to the drawing. She pointed to Annelicca of Gryffindor.
"It looks like the Elder Futhark runeset. The twenty-four runes we have been working with", Annelicca replied proudly.
"That is correct, Annelicca!", Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor. Yes, this layout is called the Futhark layout because the layout represents the twenty-four runes of the Elder Futhark runeset".

Whoosh! A spitball sped past the professor and hit Annelicca in the head.

"Hey!", gasped Annelicca as she turned around to see the Slytherins in the back of the room grinning and acting innocent.

Professor Rose turned to the Slytherins in the back of the room and glared at them, "Alright, who did that?!"

One minute of silence passed.

"Five points from Slytherin", Rose said angrily.
A few soft groans could be heard from the back of the room.

"Who can tell me the names and meanings of the symbols on this layout?", Rose continued. She pointed to Maddy of Hufflepuff, "Maddy?"

"Yes, Professor. Each symbol is of the twenty-four runes in the Elder Futhark. The symbol your randomly drawn rune lands on will relate to what that symbol means", Maddy explained.

"That's correct, Maddy", Rose smiled, "Can you give me an example?"

"Yes, ma'am. For a rune placed on the first square which is Fehu, the rune's meaning would relate to money matters", Maddy replied.

"That's correct, Maddy!", Rose smiled.

"The meanings of the symbols on this layout are as follows", Maddy continued,

Fehu: Money matters. Psychic energies.

Uruz: Physical health. Vital energies.

Thurisaz: What opposed you (perhaps physical).

Ansuz: Sources of inspiration and intellectual expression.

Raidho: Travels&emdash;inner or outer.

Kenaz: Creativity. Erotic relationships.

Gebo: What will be given to you.

Wunjo: Relationships, friends. What will give you happiness.

Hagalaz: Area of possible crisis leading to transformation.

Nauthiz: What resists you (psychically). Source of discontent.

Isa: What is constraining you.

Jera: Where rewards can be expected. Relationship with the natural environment.

Eihwaz: Hidden influences, state of whole being. Relationship with the numinous environment.

Perth: How you will find joy.

Algiz: Thing that needs attention. Way to the gods.

Sowilo: What will guide you.

Tiwaz: Cognitive state. Legal matters. Ideals.

Berkana: What provides growth and beauty.

Ehwaz: With what or whom you should work. Erotic relations.

Mannaz: Overall psychic state. Attitude toward death.

Laguz: State of emotional Balance. What will test you.

Ingwaz: What you should contemplate.

Dagaz: Area of unexpected synchronicity.

Othala: Greater family matters. National or community issues."

"Very good, Maddy!", Rose smiled, "Five points to Hufflepuff. Now,would anyone like to explain how you would do a reading using this layout? Laura?"

"Yes, ma'am, I would", Laura of Gryffindor replied, "To do a reading for this layout, you would begin as the previous methods by laying out a white cloth and placing this layout sheet on it. Next you would get your bag of runes and shake them while you think of a question requiring an answer of more than yes or no. Starting from the top left, you would randomly draw a rune and place it on that symbol. Continue randomly drawing runes and placing one on each of the runes going left to right until all of your twenty-four runes are on the twenty-four symbols on the layout sheet. Next and starting at the top left rune symbol, you would get the meaning of the rune you put on the symbol and the meaning would relate to the symbol on the layout. Continue on each row left to right. You would get a complex answer to your question."

"Very good, Laura!", Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor!"

Rose turned to the class, "For the last twenty minutes of class, I would like everyone to practice doing a reading using this layout and I will walk around to see how you do". With a flick of her wand, the layout sheet appeared on the students' desks.

The students took out their runes and set to work practicing while they took notes. The professor walked around the room and checked on their work.

All too soon the bell rang.
"As part of your homework, I would like everyone to tell me if you liked this runecasting method. Tell me what you like or don't like about it and why".

With a wave of her wand, Professor Rose gave the students their homework parchments.

The students gathered their belongings and proceeded to their next class.
