LESSON 32

Casting the Norns

At the next meeting of the class, the students noticed their desks were arranged in a large circle as they had been at the previous lesson. In the center of the circle was a large white cloth and the professor. The professor held a bag of runes in her hands. Written on the board at the front of the classroom were the words Casting the Norns.

"Everyone please take a seat and get out your runebags", Professor Rose smiled as the students took their seats in the circle,"You'll also want to take some notes at the beginning of this lesson".

After everyone was seated and had their notetaking materials and runebags ready, Professor Rose began the lesson, "Today's lesson will be another practical one so you won't need your textbooks. I'm happy to see you're all ready for our lesson".

The professor entered the circle of desks and sat down on the white cloth. "Today we will be learning another Simple Runecasting method called Casting the Norns. Before we start with our practice, let me start by explaining why this method is named this way. As you may recall from earlier lessons, the rune set we have been studying is of Norse origins. The name of the set is not only Norse, but some of the methods of reading them are Norse as well. This method, Casting the Norns is named after the three Norse goddesses of Fate; Past, Present, and Future. Fate was very important to the ancient Norse. The runes are drawn to represent the past, present, and future of your question. If everyone would observe the white cloth in the center of the circle, I will demonstrate how this method is done".
The professor shook her runebag. "First, we have our white cloth. Next, we concentrate on a question as we place our hand inside and stir the runes a bit. Now we draw three runes and place them on the cloth in a row. If any of the runes are placed face down, we turn it over like the page of a book so that the rune is showing. Can anyone tell me how I would read these three drawn runes?"
The professor glanced around the room and picked an eager Gryffindor, "Laura Lou?"
"The three runes would be read in order: past, present, and future. The first rune would represent the past of the situation in question, the second rune represents the present path the reader is on, and the third rune suggests the future and possible outcome if you continue on the present path", Laura Lou explained confidently.
"That is correct Laura Lou!", Professor Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor!"

The sound of scratching of quills on parchment could be heard as the students took notes of what the professor said and did.

The professor placed her runes back into her runebag, then said to the class, "For the last few minutes, I would like everyone to take a place here in the circle and practice doing Casting the Norns. I'd like everyone to work quietly".
Everyone took a place inside the circle of desks on the white cloth and practiced while the professor walked around them and observed. She watched as the various students casted out runes of various types and colors. There were wooden runes and handcarved stoned runes of various colors with carved symbols on them.

All too soon it was time for the lesson to end and some students reluctantly put away their runestones and packed their belongings. They were enjoying the practice portion of their lesson and hated to see it end.

"Be sure to do your homework and bring it with you to the next class. Class dismissed", Professor Rose smiled as each student picked up their homework as they exited the classroom and went on to their next class.

Featured in this lesson were hermione_watson05 (Laura Lou) of Gryffindor who had requested to be featured in the lessons.

HOMEWORK:

1. What method of runecasting did we talk about today? (5 hp)

We talked about the method "Casting the Norns".

2. Explain the reason for this method's name. (5 hp)

The runeset we are learning about are of Norse origin. The Norns are the three Norse Goddesses of Fate. These are of Past, Present, and Future. Fate was important to the Ancient Norse. The three runes drawn represent the Norns: Past, Present, Future. The runes are drawn to represent the past, present, and future of your question.

3. How is this method done? (5 hp)

After placing a white cloth in front of you and shaking the runes a bit, three runes are drawn from the pouch of runes one at a time and placed in a row. If any of the three runes are drawn face down, they are turned over like a page of a book. They are read from left to right, in the order drawn out of the pouch.

4. What do the runes read represent? (5 hp)

The first rune represents the past of the situation in question. The second rune represents the path the asker is on. The third rune suggests the future - a possible outcome - if continued on the present path for the question.

EXTRA CREDIT: For an optional 10 hp, write a short story of you using this runecasting method. Be creative. :)

Those that did the Extra Credit did well on it. :)
