LESSON 30

One-Rune Casting

After all of the students has settled into their seats, Professor Rose handed out their homework from Lesson 29, "You all did well on Lesson 29. I am proud of you". Rose smiled as she looked over the class.

"Does everyone have their runes with them today?", Rose asked the class, followed by many yeses and a few nos, "Those of you who forgot their runes will share with your classmate seated next to you. I will not deduct any housepoints this time, but if anyone forgets their runes for any future lessons, I will deduct points. Now everyone get out their textbooks and turn to the Rune Casting unit, chapter 30 and get out your notes if you haven't already".

Rose waited a few minutes as she waited for the page-turning to stop and the students to prepare to take notes.

"Today, we will begin with one of the Simple-Layout Runecasting methods called 'One-Rune' Layout. But, before we begin with that, we need to go over a couple of important things you must know in order to do runecasting correctly. These are located in your textbook", the professor explained, "Who would like to tell me one of the things you should know? Star of Gryffindor, would you read the first two paragraphs, please?"

The young Gryffindor girl glanced up as she finished writing notes with her quill, nodded, and began to read, "In order to do runecasting properly, you must do the following: First, find a place where you won't be disturbed. Try to sit facing North if possible, fore the runes are Norse. Place a small white cloth in front of you. The cloth is for working with the runes and for protecting them from getting dirty. Form a question in your mind. Take your time. It's very important that you not change your question during the reading because it will effect your reading. The results will not be correct. Once the question is firmly in your mind, gently mix the runes in your container. As you concentrate on your question, draw the number of runes you need. Be sure to pick the ones you feel drawn to. Stir and continue to draw runes until you have the correct number of runes in front of you for the layout you are doing. Keep track of the order the runes are pulled, laying them in order".

"Thank you, Star", Rose smiled, "Why is it important that you not change the question during the reading?"

"Because it will effect your reading and not make it accurate?", Star replied shyly.

"That is correct, Star!", Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor. Can anyone tell me what is the one thing you must remember when reading runes?" The professor looked around at the raised and unraised hands, then picked a smiling Slytherin girl in the back, "Fiona?"

"Each rune could mean different things", Fiona replied after glancing ahead to the next paragraph in her textbook, "It's up to you, the caster, to determine how the meanings of the runes apply to the question".

"That is correct, Fiona", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin. Yes, runes are obscure. It is also possible to get gut feelings for a deeper interpretion of the runes. Beginners should stick to the recognized meanings of the runes, but learn to expand on the meanings through gained insight and meditation on the runes drawn".

"Now, who can tell me how you would do a One-Rune Casting?", Rose asked as she looked around the room, "Star?"

"Yes, Professor", Star of Gryffindor replied, "To do a One-Rune casting I would first prepare myself by finding a quiet spot where I wouldn't be disturbed. I would sit facing North and lay out a white cloth in front of me. Next, I would carefully think of a question I would need an answer to. After that question is firmly in my head, I would concentrate on it as I shook my bag of runes. I would draw one rune from my bag of runes that I would feel drawn to and place it on the cloth as I drew it. Depending on whether it was right side up or reversed or if it couldn't be reversed, I would determine what the rune meant. Based on the meanings of the rune, I would determine the answer to my question".

"Excellent, Star!", Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor!"

Professor Rose continued, "That is all for today. During the last few minutes, I would like everyone to practice One-Rune Casts with your runes. If you did not bring them today, share them with the classmate next to you. I expect you all to work quietly. Please be sure to do your homework. Please be sure to do your homework IN YOUR OWN WORDS or the answers will be marked as WRONG. Be sure to bring today's homework to our next class. Be sure to bring your runes to the next class".

The students practiced quietly with their runes as the professor walked up and down the aisles to monitor how they did. Soon the bell rang. The students gathered their belongings and went on to their next class.

Featured in this lesson were Starlight_39339 (Star) of Gryffindor and Jojorules2618 (Fiona) of Slytherin who had requested to be featured in the lessons.

*NOTE: I will mark any copied and pasted homework answers as wrong. Please USE YOUR OWN WORDS.

If you would like to be in a future lesson neomail me with the name you wish me to call you in class and how you would act in my class. Also, if you would like to be in more than one lesson let me know that as well. Thank you.

If you have recently submitted your request to be in a future lesson, but haven't seen yourself yet, you'll be in the next lesson.

HOMEWORK: (The students' answers must be in their own words close to the answers below, but not my words.)

1. How do you prepare to do a runecasting? (5 pts)

First, find a place where you won't be disturbed. Keep track of the order the runes are pulled, laying them in order.

2. Why is it important not to change the question during the runecasting? (5pts)

It will effect your reading.

3. How is a One-Rune Casting done? (5 pts)

Prepare yourself. Form a firm question as you shake your runebag. Draw one lot (rune) from your runebag and place on the white cloth. Determine its meaning from whether it is right side up or reversed and what it may mean in answer to your question.

4. What is the one thing you must remember when reading runes? (5 pts)

Runes are obscure, that is, each rune could mean different things. It is up to the caster to determine how the meanings apply to the question. It's possible to get gut feelings for deeper interpretations. Beginners should stick to the recognized meanings of the runes, but learn to expand on the meanings through gained insight and meditation.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Try your own One-Rune Casting based on this lesson.
Make the 24 runes based on the 24 runes you have learned in this class out of a piece of paper. Place them into a small bag.
Based on this lesson, describe how you would do your own One-Rune Casting, note the rune you picked and what the rune said in answer to your question. (10 pts)

Only two students did this!
