LESSON 27

MORE ABOUT FUTHARKS AND AETTS

"Good morning Class", Professor Rose smiled as the students took their seats and got out their supplies for class, "You all did well with Lesson 26 about Futharks". The professor waved her wand and the students' marked homework parchments appeared on their desks.

As the students put their marked homework parchments away, the professor said, "Would everyone turn to Chapter 27 in their textbooks please?" After noting everyone had turned to the correct place in their textbook, the Professor continued, "Today we will be learning a little bit more about Futharks, specifically the Elder Futhark we have been studying in this class. We will also learn about AEtts".

The professor walked to the board and the word AEtt appeared, "As you may see in your textbook in Chapter 27, it tells us more about Futharks and Aetts - what they are and what they mean. Also explains further where the word Futhark comes from".
A young Gryffindor raised her hand. After Professor Rose called on her, Brenda asked, "Didn't we talk about where the word Futhark came from in our last lesson?"

Professor Rose smiled as she replied, "Yes, we did, but I did not explain it fully yet."
Brenda smiled and nodded.
"Would you like to read the first few paragraphs from Chapter 27, Brenda?", Professor Rose smiled.

Brenda began to read, "The Elder Futhark, or group of twenty-four runes, is broken up into three sections or three groups of eight runes. The group is called an 'AEtt'. Plural it is called 'AEttir'. The names of the three Aetts in the Elder Futhark in order are: Freyja's AEtt, Heimdall's AEtt, and Tyr's AEtt".

"Very good, Brenda", Professor Rose smiled, "Now if everyone would look at the board, you will see that the word 'FUTHARK' is made of the first letters from the first six runes of the first AEtt, Freyja".

Professor heard the flurry of quills on parchment as the students took notes of the following on the board:

The word FUTHARK originates from the first letters of the first six runes of the first AEtt, as follows:
F from "Fehu"
U from "Uruz
TH from "Thurisaz"
A from "Ansuz"
R from "Raido"
K from "Kenaz"

After all of the students had completed taking their notes from what was written on the board, Professor Rose asked, "By what we have learned today about the Elder Futhark, who can tell me what they think the theme of this Futhark of runes is?"

Many hands went up. Professor Rose looked around the room, then picked an eager Ravenclaw, "Wise?"

"Yes, due to the names of the AEtts or AEttir", Wise replied confidently, "I would say the Elder Futhark has a Norse theme".

"That is correct, Wise", Rose smiled, "Five points to Ravenclaw. Yes, the Elder Futhark has a Norse theme because each AEtt is named after a Norse god or goddess".
Professor Rose glanced at the clock. "That is all for today, class", Rose smiled, "Be sure to do your homework and to bring it in to the next class. Class dismissed".

The students gathered their belongings and went on to their next class.
