LESSON 26

FUTHARK

As the class took their seats they noticed the word "FUTHARK" was written on the board instead of a picture of a rune.

"Good morning, everyone", Professor Rose smiled after everyone had seated themselves and had prepared for class,"As you know, we finished going over all of the runes and will be starting something different. You all did well on the Quiz. I am proud of all of you". She smiled as she waved her wand and everyone's Quiz parchments appeared on their desks.

After everyone put their Quiz parchments away, Professor Rose continued, "Today things start to get interesting". She smiled as she looked at the rows of faces with interested expressions on them.

Rose turned to the word on the board, "Today we will be discussing 'Futharks'. Does everyone have their textbooks open to Chapter 26?", she asked, then nodded in approval as she noted everyone did.

"Who would like to read the first two paragraphs?", she asked as a few hands sprung up eagerly, "Wise would you do us the honor while the rest of the class takes notes?"

Wise cleared his throat, then began to read aloud, "Futharks. A Futhark is a runic alphabet which is composed of runic symbols. Each symbol, or rune, has a specific meaning and represents a phonetic sound. The word, Futhark, comes from the characters from the first six runes. Early peoples used the runes originally as a means of communication and only later for magical purposes. Many types of Futharks have been used throughout the ages, but only three are used today".

"Thank you, Wise", Professor Rose smiled, "Can anyone tell me what the three Futharks used today are?"

The professor glanced around the room at the raised hands, then to the back where a Slytherin girl sat. Rose walked back to the girl and glanced down at her. The girl, dressed in a black dress, orange and green beads, orange leggings with orange and white striped socks with hot pink flowers on them and purple timberlands had her nose in a Algebra book, her hot pink hair with yellow tips covered her face.
"SELENA!", the professor said sternly, "Put that Algebra book away, please, and tell us what three futharks are in use today".

Selena quickly closed and put away her Algebra book which was opened on top of her opened Ancient Runes textbook and looked at the professor as she blinked her fancy fake eyelashes in surprise at being caught, "Oh! I'm sorry, Professor!" After quickly composing herself, Selena glanced at her textbook at the paragraph under where Wise had read, then replied, "The three Futharks are The Elder Futhark, The Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger or Scandinavian Futhark".

"Very good, Selena!", Rose said, "Five points to Slytherin. However, stay after class for detention".

Selena nodded, "Yes, Professor".

The professor waited for a few moments to allow the students to catch up with their notes as she heard a flury of quills scratching against parchment. Only after they had slowed, did she continue.

"Can anyone tell me which Futhark we have been studying in this class?", Rose asked, then pointed to an eager Ravenclaw, "Mary?"

"We have been studying the Elder Futhark", Mary answered confidently.

"Very good, Mary", Rose smiled, "Five points to Ravenclaw".

"That is all for today, class", Rose smiled, "Be sure to do your homework and to bring it in to the next class. Class dismissed".

The students gathered their belongings and went on to their next class. Selena reported to the professor for detention.
