LESSON 24

DAGAZ

After the students had seated themselves, Professor Rose handed out their marked Quiz parchments as the students took out their textbooks and note taking materials for class.

"You all did very well on the Quiz", Rose smiled as the students reacted favorably to their marks, "I am very proud of all of you for doing so well in my class". Many students clapped at this remark; particularly the Ravenclaws.

"Now, everyone put your Quiz parchments away and open your Ancient Runes textbooks to Chapter 24", Rose instructed.

She waited a few moments as the sounds of rustling papers and the opening of books could be heard. Students opened their inkwells and prepared to take notes as they watched Professor Rose with anticipation.

After Rose noted everyone was ready, she turned to the board as she said, "Let's talk about the next rune" and waved her hand toward it. A rune appeared on the board:

"Who can tell me the name of this rune?", Rose asked as she looked around the ocean of interested faces. She called on a Slytherin girl, "Crysthia?"

Crysthia looked up at the professor; not expecting to be called on, "It is called DAGAZ".

"That is correct, Crysthia", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin". She again looked around the room as she asked, "Can anyone tell me some things about the Dagaz rune?" Many hands went up; mostly Gryffindors and Ravenclaws. Rose pointed to a familiar Ravenclaw in front, "Wise?"

Wise sat straight in his chair as he answered proudly and with confidence, "The Dagaz rune stands for the letter D and it cannot be reversed. The rune has several meanings. It means Breakthrough, awakening, awareness. At time to plan or start a business. The power of change directed by your own will, transformation. Hope/happiness, the ideal. Security and certainty. Growth and release. Balance point, the place where opposites meet".

Professor Rose smiled as she said, "That is perfect, Wise. Five points to Ravenclaw".

The professor glanced at the rune pictured on the board, "Now, can anyone tell me what this rune looks like?"

She pointed to a Slytherin girl in the back, "Nancy?"

The young Slytherin glanced up from the doodles she was drawing as she pretended to take notes. She cleared her throat slightly as she looked at the rune pictured on the board, "Well, it looks kinda like the eyes of an owl. It also could be a capital M looking at its reflection or two capital M's together".

"Very good, Nancy", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin".

"That will be all for today's lesson", Rose said, "Laura Lou, would you pass out the homework parchments to everyone, please?"

The young Gryffindor happily took the homework parchments from the professor and passed them out to all of the students as the professor explained, "Be sure to do your homework and to bring it in to the next class. Class dismissed".

The students gathered their belongings and went on to their next class.
