![]() After the students had taken their seats in the Ancient Runes classroom and prepared their supplies for the lesson, Professor Rose walked to the board, "Good, I see everyone is prepared for class today", she smiled as she observed the open Ancient Runes textbooks on the students' desks along with their notetaking supplies at the ready. "Let's talk about the next rune", Rose said as she waved her hand and a rune appeared on the board: ![]() "As you can see, this rune looks a bit different or unusual than the runes we have talked about in this class", Professor Rose explained, "Can anyone describe what this rune looks like?" Several hands went up; mostly Ravenclaws and Gryffindors. A couple of Slytherins had their hands raised, but most did not volunteer an answer. Rose picked a Slytherin girl in the back who seemed more interested in looking at herself in the mirror instead of the lesson. "Alexandra Hargrove!", the Professor's voice said loudly, "Can you describe for the class what this rune looks like?" Alexandra seemed startled to be called on while distracted, but seemed to recover as she gazed at the rune on the board, then replied, "Well, it seems to look like ancient Viking writing; like a capital M or like two flags tied together." Rose smiled as she said, "Very good, Alexandra! Five points to Slytherin house!" Professor Rose turned to the class as she explained, "This rune is called Mannaz and it does look like the letter M. Can anyone tell me what letter or letters this rune stands for?" Several hands went up including the one from the eager Ravenclaw Wise in the front row. She called on him. "The physical appearance is a clue to the letter this rune stands for. The Mannaz rune stands for the letter M", Wise answered proudly. "Very good, Wise! Five points to Ravenclaw", Rose smiled, "Can anyone tell me if this rune can be reversed and what its meanings are?" Again, Wise's hand shot up in front of her. She called on him again;which resulted with the giggles from the Slytherins in back of the classroom. She casted them a stern look. "Yes, this rune can be reversed", Wise responded, "May I give the meanings of this rune?" Rose nodded and smiled. "This rune has several meanings. This rune is associated with the Self, the individual, or the human race", Wise explained, "It is your attitude toward others and vice versa. Friends and enemies, social order. Intelligence, forthought, skill, create, ability. Divine structure, awareness. Expect to receive some sort of aid now. Reversed this rune means Depression, mortality, self-delusion, blindness. Cunning, slyness, manipulation. craftiness, calculation. Expect no help now." "Very good, Wise. Five points to Ravenclaw!", Rose smiled. "That will be all for today's lesson", Rose explained, "Be sure to do your homework and to bring it in to the next class", Professor Rose smiled as homework parchments appeared on the students' desks, "Class dismissed".
