LESSON 21

EHWAZ

Professor Rose sat at her desk at the front of the Ancient Runes classroom as the students entered and took their seats. She held a stack of parchments in front of her. As the students passed the professor's desk they noticed the top parchment had a student's writing on it along with a big purple "O" at the top of the page.

"Everyone take your seats", Rose smiled at the students, "New students, you can sit where you like as long as you don't start trouble." Soon everyone was seated.

"Good morning, everyone", Professor Rose smiled, as she stood in front of the class, "For you new students who don't know me, I am Professor Rose and welcome to Ancient Runes. We have so far been learning about the different runes and are about the talk about the next rune in class today. First, I'll return your Quiz parchments that you did last time".

Professor Rose gathered the stack of parchments on her desk as she called out, "Laura Lou, would you hand these Quiz parchments out to their rightful owners, please?"

"Yes, ma'am", the young Gryffindor said proudly as she began to hand out the Quiz parchments to their rightful owners.

"What Laura Lou is giving you is the Quiz you did last time on Lessons nineteen and twenty", Professor Rose explained, "You all did well on the quiz." A few yeses and yays could be heard in the classroom as the students looked at their marks for their returned Quizzes.

"Now, let's get out our textbooks and notes to get ready to learn about the next rune", the professor said sternly as a rune appeared on the board with the wave of her wand.

As the rune appeared, a few giggles could be heard from the rear of the classroom; mostly from the Slytherins. Professor Rose looked at them sternly as she said, "Today we will be learning about the rune called Ehwaz", Rose explained as she pointed at the rune on the board, "As you can see, it looks like the letter M". She smiled as she heard uh-huhs and a few giggles.

As the professor looked towards the back of the classroom, she saw one Slytherin girl, Selena, who appeared bored as she drummed her quill on her desk and stared up at the ceiling instead of paying attention to the lesson. Professor Rose remembered she was one of her decent Slytherin students who received decent marks in class.

Rose looked at Selena pointedly as she asked in a loud voice, "Selena!" The girl practically jumped as she heard the professor's voice and looked at the professor with a startled look on her face.

"Can you tell us what the name of this rune is, Selena?", Rose asked.

"Um...the Ehwaz rune?", Selena answered hesitantly.

"That is correct, Selena", Rose replied, "Ten points to Slytherin. However, stay after class for detention, Selena, and pay attention!"

"Yes, Professor Rose", Selena responded embarrassed.

"Now, can anyone tell me what letter or letters this rune represents?", Rose asked as she looked around the room.
Professor Rose looked toward the right corner of the room and noticed a Ravenclaw girl staring at one of the boys in class instead of paying attention to the lesson. Rose sighed softly, then said evenly, "Reena of Ravenclaw?"

The young Ravenclaw jumped slightly as her name was called. She glanced down at her opened textbook, then answered, "The Ehwaz rune represents the letters 'Eh'".

"That is correct, Reena!", Rose smiled, "Ten points to Ravenclaw."

Reena sighed softly with relief. She had been lucky with getting the correct answer even though she was not paying attention to the lesson.

"Can anyone tell me what this rune means and if it can be reversed?", Rose asked as she looked around the classroom. She called on the eager Gryffindor Laura Lou.
"The Ehwaz rune can be reversed. It means movement or change for the better. Gradual and steady progress. Harmony, trust, loyalty, trust. A good time to travel or a journey. Reversed it means feel confined or restless. Crave change. Mistrust, disharmony, reckless haste. The reversed rune is not really a negative rune", Laura Lou explained.

"Very good, Laura Lou", Professor Rose smiled, "Ten points to Gyffindor".

"That will be all for today's lesson", Rose explained, "Be sure to do your homework and to bring in to the next class", Professor Rose smiled as homework parchments appeared on the students' desks, "Class dismissed. Selena, please come up to my desk for your detention".

The class gathered their belongings and left the classroom, except for Selena of Slytherin who remained behind for detention.
