LESSON 18

TEIWAZ

Professor Rose sat at her desk as the students filed into the classroom and took their seats. After they were all seated, she stood before them.

"You all did well with your last lesson on the Perth rune", she smiled at the class, "Today we will be discussing another rune."

Professor Rose waved her wand at the board and a rune appeared:

"Now, before I ask you which rune this is, I would like everyone to tell me what you think of this rune by how it appears."

A few hands went up. Others continued to stare at the rune.

"Yes?", Professor Rose asked as she called on a Gryffindor who had eagerly raised his hand.

"Well, it looks like an arrow. It looks kind of like a Viking symbol".

"That is a very good observation, Soli", Rose smiled, "Five points to Gryffindor."
Rose turned toward the class and continued, "I just wanted to show you an example of one of the ancient viking symbols of the runes we have been learning about and this is a perfect example. There is also something interesting about this rune, which I will get into later on in the lesson. Now, can anyone tell me which rune this is?"

Several hands went up.
After she looked around the class a moment and made her way to the back of the classroom, Rose called on a Slytherin girl who was involved in a conversation with another Slytherin.

Nancy paused nervously when she was called on, then asked tentatively, "Um, is it the Teiwaz rune?"

"That is correct, Nancy", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin".
Professor Rose's look turned stern as she looked at Nancy and her friend, "However, you and Mandy were talking in class instead of paying attention so I must see you both in detention! See me after class."

Both girls visibly sighed in frustration and glared at the Professor as she made her way to the front of the classroom to continue the lesson.

"Now, can anyone tell me what this rune means and if it can be reversed?", Rose asked the class.

Several hands went up, but Rose pointed to another Slytherin girl and smiled.

"It means Victory, justice", the Slytherin girl explained, "It can be reversed. Reversed it means struggle, injustice. Battles".

"Excellent!", Professor Rose smiled, "That is correct. Five points to Slytherin. In addition to Victory and justice, it can also mean knowing where your true strength lies. Spiritual warrior. Reversed it can also mean passive sacrifice. Can anyone tell me what letter or letters the Teiwaz rune represents?"

Again, several hands went up, but Professor Rose called on a Ravenclaw.

"The Teiwaz rune represents the letter T", Wise said proudly.

"That is correct, Wise", Rose smiled, "Five points to Ravenclaw."

Rose glanced at the clock and noticed it was nearly time for class to end.
"Before I assign your homework, I would like to tell you something interesting about this rune which may help you in the future when casting runes".

Rose paused a moment as she noticed the class had their full attention on her and many had their quills in hand ready to take notes. Rose smiled proudly at the students.

"You may remember this rune looks like an arrow. Now this can help you in two ways. One way is this is a clue that this rune is reversable. The second way seeing the arrow whether it is right side up or reversed, it can help you to remember the meanings of the rune right side up or reversed".

"That is all for today", Rose smiled. She waved her wand and homework papers appeared on the students' desks. "Here is your homework which is due two weeks from today. Class dismissed."

The students gathered their belongings and left the classroom, except for Mandy and Nancy who went up to Professor Rose for their detention.

*The students featured in today's lesson were Solipuma, Mvswimmer1 who had requested to be in a class lesson. Also featured were pandab8284 and Rosejun62.
