The students filed into the room and took their seats as the professor waved her wand to make another rune appear on the board.
"Can anyone tell me which rune this is?", the Professor asked, "It looks similar to another rune we talked about in a previous lesson so think carefully before you answer". Several students eagerly raised their hands.
Professor Rose looked around the room and decided to call on the in the back who rifled through her purse instead of paying attention to the lesson.
"Mary?", Professor Rose said evenly, "You should be paying attention to the lesson instead of playing with your purse. Five points from Ravenclaw. Can you tell us what today's rune is?"
The professor glared at the student angrily.
Mary glanced around the classroom at the eyes that stared at her. Some of the Slytherin students grinned at her and Mary glared back at them.
Mary took a confident breath and looked at the rune on the board, "It's the Sowelu rune".
The professor smiled and nodded, "That is correct, Mary. Two points to Ravenclaw".
Mary smiled confidently.
"See me after class for detention, Mary", the professor added. Mary nodded sadly.
The professor turned back to the class. "Can anyone tell me what this rune means or what letter it stands for?"
Many students eagerly raised their hands, but Professor Rose's attention was again drawn to the back of the classroom as she noticed Genieve frantically searching through her bookbag.
"Genieve? Is there a problem?", Rose asked.
Genieve looked up and said nervously, "I...I.. forgot my Ancient Runes book".
Professor Rose looked at the nervous student a moment, then said firmly with some gentleness in her voice, "Now you know it is important to remember to bring your textbook to class. You won't have detention this time. If you forget your textbook again, you will have to have detention".
"Yes Professor Rose", Genieve said with relief in her voice, "I will remember my book next time".
The professor smiled, then asked, "Can you tell us anything you remember about this rune?"
Genieve thought a moment, then replied confidently, "It stand for the letter S. I think it means success through willpower. It cannot be reversed".
"Very good, Genieve", Rose smiled, "Five points to Slytherin. Yes, it stands for the letter S. You are partially right with the meaning. This rune means sun, energy, enlightenment. With this rune you have success, your goals are achieved, and you have honor. You're correct that this rune cannot be reversed".
Professor Rose glanced at the clock.
"That concludes our lesson for today", Professor Rose announced to the class, "Here is your homework which is due two weeks from today. Class dismissed."
The students gathered their belongings and left the classroom. Mary went up to the professor to receive her detention.
