LESSON 14

ALGIZ

Professor Rose sat at her desk at the front of the classroom as the students came in.

"Everyone, please bring your homework for lesson thirteen up to my desk, then open your Ancient Runes books to page fifty", Rose said to the class.

After everyone took their seats, Rose stood and began the lesson.
"Today, class, we will be talking about the rune ALGIZ", Rose explained as she waved her wand and the rune appeared on the board.

Rose turned toward the class, "Can anyone tell me something about the Algiz rune?"
Several hands went up.
Rose pointed to a Gryffindor girl, "Yes, Laura Lou?"
Laura smiled as she responded, "It means protection and it can be reversed. Its reversed meaning is possible danger or failure. You need to avoid a situation."
"Very good, Laura", Rose smiled, "Ten points to Gryffindor! Can anyone tell me what letters this rune represents?"
She pointed to a Ravenclaw boy named Wise as his hand shot up.
"It represents Z or R", he answered.
"Very good, Wise", Rose smiled, "Ten points to Ravenclaw."
Rose's attention was drawn to two Slytherin girls seated behind Wise. Michelle a first year Slytherin and Scarlett who was known to sass other students not of her house. They were giggling softly and pointing at him. Wise looked back at them for a moment, then turned back to the professor as she conducted the lesson.
"MICHELLE AND SCARLETT!", the professor yelled at the girls, "I will not tolerate that behavior in my class! Report to me after class for detention."
Both girls quieted down and gave the professor dirty looks. "Yes, ma'm", they said in unison.

Professor Rose turned back toward the class, "Yes, both Laura Lou and Wise were correct with their answers. Additionally, the Algiz rune means it can ward off evil. In its reversed form it can also mean vulnerability.

Professor Rose waved her wand and parchment appeared on the students' desks.
"Here is your homework for today. It is due at your next class. Also be sure to study lessons thirteen and fourteen because next class we will be having a quiz. Class dismissed."

Moans echoed through the room as the students departed, except for two girls. Michelle and Scarlett went up to Professor Rose for their detention.
