How To:   Build Ponds and Water Gardens
Read & Plan- Start with water garden books, magazines and the internet.  This will help with your important decisions.

Style -Round , Irregular (natural look), kidney shape,(good for adding  bridge), rectangular,(formal look) or built above ground.

Decisions:
You may want to start with a container garden with water then add pond later. (good practice)     Decide on size- use a hose in yard & measure.
Smal
l- affordable- but only a few fish & plants.  Nice to have in the middle of your garden.
Medium
- about 10 x15. You can start out with inexpensive supplies-pump, filter then upgrade when you can afford to. Large - 20 x 20 or more- Plan on spending more for larger pump, filter etc..  BUT is worth it in the long run.

Saftey:
Check with utilities companies before you dig.  Also town rules and regulations on ponds. If you have young children,  consider a waterfall and add a pond later. The water should be at least 2 ft. deep,  especially in the northern climates.

Choice: Pond, watergaden, koi pond can be made from EPDM liner(fish safe), Preformed plastic,  concrete or clay.

To Build or not to Build
: You can build yourself  or if you decide to hire someone make sure they have expirience in pond building & water gardens.
Do
not have a water garden or Koi pond if you are not willing to maintain and put some time & work into it!

TIPS on PONDING

Leaf net for fall- also from predators like "the heron"

Plan some shade - reduces algae  and  for fish.

Raising Koi or large amount of fish requires larger pond and aeration.

One inch of fish per 1 gallon of water.

Plan on some shelves for plants in containers or between rocks.
Some ponds are made from old inground swimming pools.

Make just a stream in the garden!
You
can have streams,  waterfalls, and ponds.

If you can't sleep at night dream of ideas for your pond & fish!!
