DARIUS DANESH soared straight to the top of the charts with his debut single yesterday. The Scots Pop Idol semi-finalist knocked fellow contestant Gareth Gates from the No1 spot - and kept Britney spears at No 7 with his own composition Colourblind.
Treasure
As he celebrated his success last night, delighted Darius, 21, of Bearsden, Glasgow, was at no loss for words to describe his feelings. He said: "This is a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life. I am over the mon that people like something I've written. "It's an upbeat guitar-based summer pop song. I hope can put smiles on the faces of people across a very wide demograph - the kind of song that people listen to and hum along to on their way home from work and that kids sing on their way to school." The former Edinburgh University student added " Colourblind is the best way I can thank the public for their support through Pop Idol. "Not by churning a cover song out off the back of the incredible success of the programme, but by going in on my own. I'm enjoying every single minute of each day. "I've been given the most incredible opportunity by teh public by the fact that they voted for me - they changed my life around really. "I suppose if I stop to think about it I might find it overwhelming but my goals are simply to make music and be happy.
Mocked
Darius was once mocked by the nation after covering Britney Spears' Baby One More Time on ITV's original Popstars show. But he resisted the temptation to take a pop at his critics. He said: "I would actually like to thank them. Through the criticism I took on board, I learned the lessons that have allowed me to get where I am today. "We all make mistakes and I made mine on national television" Colourblind was produced by Steve Lillywhite, the studio legend who helped shape U2's early sound. Darius landed a deal with Mercury Records after finishing third in Pop Idol. He is the third Pop Idol star to land a No1 following the success of Gareth - now No2 with Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) - and contest winner Will Young. Darius said he was now looking forward to the release of his debut album which is scheduled to hit streets in November. Thankyou to The Sun for the story
