National Audubon Society
TheNational Audubon Society, is a private
organization that works to conserve wildlife and its environment. Its mission is focused on the benefits
of wildlife and humanity.The organization is named after American naturalist and
wildlife painter John James Audubon.
The organization was founded in 1905 as the National Association of Audubon Societies
for the Protection of Wild Birds and Animals. Its name was shortened in 1940 to the National
Audubon Society. It is the largest organization of its type in the country. The Society is
funded by membership dues and gifts. There are about 550,000 members and more than 500 chapters
throughout the Americas. There are over 100 sanctuaries and nature centers in operation
throughout the United States.
