Actually, both of these are true and false. In the original manga, Puar is translated as a male, whereas in the anime, Puar is translated as a female. However, in response to one of Akira Toriyama's fan letters, Puar is neither male or female, he never intended to give Puar a specific gender. So why is Puar addressed to as a Male/Female? Simple, it's more polite than "it." Can you imagine Bulma saying "Oolong, go help it!" Of course not. And there is the confusion created since Puar's voice actor is female, so what? Goku's original voice actor was female. And of course there are those of you who think that it's impossible not to have a gender, ever hear of earthworms?
Definitely False. How anyone could mistake Puar for a mouse is beyond me. It can only be assumed that these people have never seen a mouse before, real or otherwise. So I will point out the differences. A mouse has a skinny worm-like tail with no visible fur, and it not very flexible. Puar's tail is thick, furry, flexible and very cat-like, it even has a white tail tip for crying out loud. Next, a mouse's hands and feet are also not visibly furry, often even flesh colored, and they actually have long fingers and toes with claws in plain sight. If you'll notice, Puar's hands and feet are very furry, have no fingers or toes, and claws are not visible because cat claws retract. Next, mouse ears are usually very tiny and round. Puar's ears are large and pointy like, oh say... a cat's! And last but not least, Yamcha annoys Puar by singing a tune from a cat food commercial. However, Akira Toriyama said that Puar is neither a cat or mouse, Puar is just Puar. But, Akira also admitted that he intentionally drew Puar a little like a cat. So why does the cat food commercial bug Puar? Simple, Yamcha's teasing Puar because he looks like a cat. Why do I call Puar a cat? It just makes my life easier.

Nowhere in the anime or manga does it show any signs of Puar and Yamcha having any romantic interest in each other, nor did Akira Toriyama intend there to be any. As I mentioned before, Puar has no gender, and for those of you who are thinking shapeshifter, apparently you need to go to the transformation section of my site. This Myth was started by desperate perverts and hopeless romantics.
