There are many enemies to the fellowship in middle earth, the large majority of who have been influenced by Sauron or the ring and forced to fight for them. The power hungry side of Saruman has also been taken over by Sauron and through the plot Saruman is building an army large enough to destroy the race of men. He creates this army out of tens of thousand Uruk hai which are large, reckless, unfeeling monsters. Crosses between goblins and orcs. |

The Black Riders, Nazgul or Ring Wraiths are shadows of formally great men. When Sauron the deceiver gave the nine rings of power to the men, they were blinded by their greed. The rings took them over and turned them into Ring Wraiths. At all times they feel the presence of the ring, drawn to the one who wears it and stopping at nothing to get it and return it to their master Saruron. |

Saruman was previously the head of his order of Istari wizards but he got hold of one of the lost seeing stones (palentirs) enabling him to see places where there are other seeing stones. As Sauron had another seeing stone he managed to corrupt Saruman through it, and control him. Saruman has found an evil assistant to help him in his plan. This is Grima Wormtongue. |
