Three-wattled Bellbird

Procnias tricarunculata
Pájaro Campana = Bellbird

The three-wattled bellbird is one of the most magnificent birds in the Monteverde cloud forest. The characteristic "bonk" that they're named for causes many to hear them, but they are harder to spot. Many people formerly thought that it was a common bird throughout Costa Rica, but when one researcher attached tracking devices to them, he discovered that it was really only a few small populations moving through a small area. Since this discovery, there has been a conservation effort to protect the three-wattled bellbird.
