Summary of the discussion with my partner, In-Jung Jun .
First, my partner and I looked at the two sites that we liked,
Dairy Info and
Pepsi.
In our comparison we noticed these features of good web design in both sites.
- Have clear purpose
For example:
- Dairy Info offers the information about Accommodation, Jobs, What's On Sales & Wanted, Oxford Guide, Food, Maps, Services, Tuition, Reviews, etc. They provide pretty well anything they could about Oxford.
- Pepsi is giving customers information about their products. We could find out that they had 7 kinds of Pepsi coke and nutritional facts and additionally linked websites..
- Good organization that makes easy to navigate
For example:
- Although Dairy Info deals with various items it's very easy to navigate, cause it's in alphabetical order. And also, it's well organized by categories. To see everything, what we do is just using the drop-down menus above.
- 'Pepsi had written out clearly about each item. And It had colorful but not too distracting pictures. Also the images they had explained us about the information efficiently.
- Well combined colors
For example:
-
Dairy Info uses softening colors so that it comforts our eyes. And they know how to stress the crucial events by using dark colors as well.
- As Pepsi is cold beverage, it should look cool. It shows an empty cup starting to fill in with ice and then with coke with sound effect. The whole page is colored blue that it made us feel really cool.
Second, follow a similar procedure with regard to the bad sites.
For example:
Then we looked at the two sites that we did not like,
The Shops and
Outback.
In our comparison we noticed these problems.
- Have unclear purpose
For example:
- The shops is attempting to set themselves up as an e-commerce solutions business, but is doesnt give a credit to customers. From these points, the sites are inappropriate for Internet shopping mall.
- Outback is filled with unimportant information instead of core information the site should have had.
- Bad design
For example:
- The colors used in The shops arent harmonized. It seems that each colors is there separately.
- Outback was hard to search through the site since the letters were too small.
- Not easy to navigate
For example:
- The shops it takes you to find it without using the browser's search function. Since it deals with too many items that are not categorized.
- Outback doesnt give information about its food, even the location was hard to search. It is because they do not have any maps for visitors. They do have their own address written out.
Finally, websites must be easy to navigate with clear purpose. Also, colors, letters and pictures must be appropriate. Lastly, good information should be given abundantly. In short, the good web design is based on how well it communicates with the viewer.
