ABSTRACT

During past decades, computer graphics research focused on the "photorealistic" technique - modeling and simulating scenes to achieve a convincing illusion of reality. However, in recent years, attention has been drawn towards illustration methods, such as impressionist painting, charcoal, water color or pen-and-ink sketches.

The review of my thesis is related to the observation of the principle of pen-and-ink illustration and study on the usage of this style for creating gloomy mood in 3D animation.

In the observation, the 7 distinct texturing technique of pen-and-ink illustration: contour lines, parallels lines, cross-hatching, dots or stripping, scribble lines, wavy grain lines and crisscross line will be explored.
The study of elements to create gloomy mood, will display methods on how pen-and-ink illustration is designed and used to match the mood in certain scenes.

Finally, the technique will be applied appropriately through texture mapping, value, design and composition in 3D animation.

THESIS ISSUES

I choose pen-and-ink illustration because it is a flexible medium, providing a great variety of style in terms of line quality, hand gesture, tone building, countless contrast through variation of value, texture and line direction.Through the understanding of mood, we can know how light affects and fell the difference between noontime sun and evening shadow.
