| One of the more sordid aspects of rock 'n' roll's early history was "cover artists", the white guys who imitated black artists wo created the songs, the arrangements, and the harmonies. But the worst part wasn't that the cover artists were imitators--the worst part was that they copied the black artists' records while the original version was still new. So the cover versions usually competed with--and usually did better than--the originals. The difference between them was often minor; one rendition sounded like it was done by white singers, the other sounded like it was done by black singers. So the lilly-white radio stations pushed the songs done by the "acceptable" (white) artists. And these artists became stars. |
| For Example, Pat Boone covered a dozen black artists and 9 out of 10 times beat them, and the original version in the charts.The Rolling Stones also liberaly used other people's music from the very begining of their musical careers. The Stones' first American Top 10 record, "time is on my side" is a note-for-note copy of the original version by Irma Thomas. |

| It can't happen here? Guess again. Each year, the American Booksellers Association holds a "Banned Books Week" to call attention to the issues surronding censorship. Here are some books that were banned, or nearly banned during the 1980's. The Diary of Anne Frank In '83 members of the Alabama State Textbook Committee wanted this book rejected because it was "a real downer". Lord of the Flies In '81 the book was challenged by a high school in Owen, NC because it was "demoralizing inasmuch as it implies that man is little more than an animal." 1984 In '81 the book was challenged in Jackson Country, FL because it was "pro-communist and contained expicit sexual matter." |

| A Light in the Attic In '96 the book was challenged at an elementary school in Mukwonago, Wisconsin because it "glorified Satan, suicide, and cannibalism, and also encouraged children to be disobedient." Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland Banned in China in 1931. Authorities objected that "animals should not use human languag, and that it was disastrous to put animals and human beings on the same level." |
