Entry for June 23, 2008
What a beautiful Day yesterday was!
We got V'ger out and fueled up at Hy-Vee in Galesburg. $4.27 for premium. Went through East Galesburg, north to Rt 34, then west. Went through Henderson, turned west to the blinking light on Rt 150, went straight and took the blacktop that eventually comes out at North Henderson. Good Blacktop!
We went straight across the Alexis blacktop and proceeded further north. Not so good blacktop in spots as it now has patches of white rock where the blacktop has broken down. Signs of the coming road conditions? Maybe. We turned left onto Rt 17 from that blacktop going through Aledo, Joy, and taking the Blacktop to Muscatine near New Boston. Fairly nice black top, several bumps and only some rough spots. Beautiful view going across the bridge over the Big River. Turned up the hill and headed to the MickyDees for a break, 76 miles from the Hy-Vee, gas was $4.07 for premium; $3.89 for regular. After the break, which was cold in there, we took Rt 38 North to I-80. This was a good road also. I-80 is always faster than I like to travel so we stopped at WalCott at the Truckstop and browsed the truck store. Nice selection of L.E.D. lights there, and some are small enough for a bike. They even have Honda turn signals, like from the seventies style bikes. Gas was $3.79 for Regular (10% Ethanol) and $4.07 for Premium. Went East again on I-80 and an airshow was in progress so we pulled off at the Flying J truck stop for a look and some gas, I hadn't filled up due to the lines at Walcott truck stop. Mileage at 112.3 since Hy-Vee. Continued East on I-80 and stopped at the Visitor Center in Illinois on the bluff overlooking the Big River. Picked up some brochures of events and festivals in different parts of the state. Continued south on I-80, got off on the Rt 6 exit and went East. Continued on until we saw a sign that said Cambridge 12 Miles and took that Black top South. Good Road. Once in Cambridge, took a left and went East to Kewanee. Then took another left and rode Rt 78 to Annawan and got back on Rt 6 and went East again. Big ethanol plant under construction East of Annawan. Took a right turn near Sheffield and Rt 34 back to Kewanee. Took Rt 78 to West Jersey, turned onto the blacktop to Rt 180 and went through Williamsfield to the "T" with Rt 150, and turned west to go home. All in all, a very nice day, Two hundred fifty-six miles!
