| Major Moore was sent to General Price under a flag of truce. Price would accept only unconditional surrender--the officers to be retained as prisoners of war and the men to be paroled after surrendering their arms and accoutrements. Amongst the men of the 23rd that night the Regimental flag was torn into shreds. Each received a small green patch, thus saving the flag from being taken as a trophy of war by the enemy. | NATIONAL COLORS - Pictured Left is the original 23rd Illinois Infantry National Flag. The flag measures right around 6 foot by 6 foot. This is probally the regiments 2nd set of National Colors, since the first was likely captured or destroyed at Lexington Missouri in 1861. A 3rd National Colors was likely issued as it is recorded that the regiment was authorized by Congress to have one Battle Honor on its flag for Lexington. This Battle Honor dose not appear on this flag. This flag is currently held by the State of Illinois. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| REGIMENTAL MARKER - The 23rd Illinois Infantry was also known as the Irish Brigade or the 1st Irish Regiment. The Regimental guidon or flank marker reflects this Irish influence. This color measures approximately 30" x 20". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| IRISH REGIMENTAL - The original Irish Regimental flag of the 23rd Illinois, dose not exist anymore. To keep it from being Captured, the brave lads of the 23rd Illinois tore it apart into many small pieces, and gave each man a piece. These men carried the flag away in their pockets and jackets, and the flag was saved. Fortunatly, a sketch was made by an original soldier, and this sketch has been sent to us. We are pleased to present, what is likely the only known picture of the Irish Green Flag of the 23rd Illinois. Just as described, the banner is a green flag with the harp of Erin on it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| NOTE - We have not been able to determine if the 23rd Illinois ever flew a second Green Flag, but will continue the research, and if one is found, will also display it here. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
