Nice to Know You
She held him in her arms and said in a shattered voice:
“I can’t follow you anymore.”
He responded with a simple low-toned:
“I understand.”
They looked into each others’ eyes and knew the truth of the situation. There was no salvaging what they had. Somehow their love had gone into a sinister abyss where neither of them could reach. It kept spiraling downward, turning into bitter regret, the kind of regret you can’t erase, the kind that spoils the stunning memories of beautiful years shared together.
Their shared ties lie here, broken in front of them just like the promises they made to each other. Devastated dreams tainted with the sweet blood of their tears. The worst kind of tears, the ones that come straight from the heart, that nourish themselves from the pain of losing the most important thing they have. In many aspects this was the only thing that mattered to them. Her sorrow kept growing from the eternal emptiness of half her soul.
Regretfully, their chosen paths were divided into two unique destinies; they could no longer share a life together. Sadly they were separated by the reality of life; love is not enough. She felt him slipping away without recognition. She felt miles away from everything she used to know. He was right in front of her but she felt miles away from the man she loved.
Sadness took over her eyes as she watched him walk away. He was walking away from her forever. The hardest thing for both of them was to let go. He hesitated and looked back; he could see her wrecked soul in her empty smile. Victoria couldn’t hold it in any longer, her tears were bursting out. The forged façade of a strong woman could no longer resist, the pain was all too real. Her heart was too broken from the narrow spade that slowly turned twisting it inside out. Antonio wanted to run back to her, but he knew the situation would only worsen. He gathered his never ending pride, the one that always obtruded their discussions and looked straight ahead. Antonio brushed things off as is nothing of great importance had occurred. He put a wall between them, the kind of wall that can’t be broken down, the kind of wall that tears friendships apart forever.
Victoria walked away as well and thought of all the things she had left unsaid. Her mentality was uncomplicated; she just thought she should have said something before he left. She looked back and watched him being torn away from her yet once again. Victoria’s eyes wept as she watched him slowly vanishing into the vast backdrop.
