Back Home

Everyone was mesmerized by the man he became. He stood tall with his head up high as he walked through the door. His uniform was absolutely perfect. He never looked better in green and looked stronger than ever. Everyone went up to him, one by one showing their true happiness to see him again. Finally it was my turn.

I hadn’t seen him in the longest time. I mostly remembered how he was when we were kids. I could still feel his love in the warmth of his arms. I was so relieved to see him back home. He was healthy but his innocence was lost. His spirit was shattered by the war. I saw the emptiness in his eyes, he wasn’t the same. His stare was cold and rigid. There was no doubt in my mind, he was a soldier now.

He was only 19, and already a killing machine. I was so glad to have him back but I didn’t understand why it had to be this way. He would never be the same again. His beautiful dreams were now broken by the nightmares of his past. The war wasn’t over, yet he was sent home. It was clearly because of his new induced trauma. I can’t blame anyone for sending him, warfare is human nature. He chose that life; at 17 his mind was already set. It’s the dirty little job young men looking for opportunities have to take. At least it was over now. Time will seal the scars of our past.

Even if he did change, our love is still strong, searching for our loved one.
