MISSION

SIGMA LAMBDA GAMMA strives to be the premier organization commited to providing a mechnaism of empowerment to all women.

As an academic, cultural, service and social organization we strive to support our sisters throuhg many obstacles that may come their way.

PURPOSE

The Purpose of SIGMA LAMBDA GAMMA Sorority shall be primarily one of promoting standards of excellence in morality, ethics, and education

Further, the Sorority shall work to better serve the needs and wants of all the people by disseminating information about the diverse culture, which we all share.

Finally, the sorority shall maintain respect for the views of others through this valuing, thereby, enhancing our understanding of one another, and thus bettering our community, our country, and the world.

My Story....

To be honest I had always seen sororities or fraternities as a just some method or way for students at an university to have something to do... to party... to have fun. I was wrong. Tough you can't blame me since most people do stereotype this organizations as that untill they have a taste of it. Then all your thoughts and perspectves are changed in a new direction. I had always had an interest in being apart of a sorority a latina sorority....this was when i was a second semester freshman in college. I would always see different group of sorority girls around the University Center during their rush week. One day back in 2000 I remember going up to an old friend from highschool which was from a sorority which the name will not be disclosed, and i asked her about her organizaton. Must it have been the fact that she knew me or i dont know what but she could never really explain anything to me about what her sorority was about. I therefore took it as all sororities of this type were the same. Or just maybe my destiny was not to be apart of that organization. They were looking for people not like me. Therefore I thought that world would never be for me.

Through the years at UH I have always had time for just studying and working. Could you guess? Yeah my major was engineering. But dont get us wrong we do know how to party sometimes even better than those who think are pros at it. LOL. In my 6 years of engineering life I would socialize but just around the same buildings and organizations which were the engineering building, Y Building, SEP building, MAES, SHPE, SWE and so on. That was my world and still is till this day apart of my life.

It all began in the fall semester of 2005. I was interested in finding something out of my usual routine and I came across a new world....the greek world. A good friend now my sorority sister open my eyes to try to know her sorority and the greek world just one more time. I had told her time after time. "It;s not for me!..It's just not". I came to meet some of these fabulous yet amazing ladies (which I have now the priviledge to call my sisters) from Sigma Lambda Gamma Chi Alpha at the University of Houston during an info session. I was able to see that they share similar goals as myself. To name a few .....to empower all women all latina women, give back to the community and most importantly academics. I gave in and let my heart follow its desires and may I say it has been an awesome experience.

I am proud to say that I crossed Fall 2005 with four other line sisters. My line name is Un Arcoiris de Diamantes and my line name and number is Alenah #91.
