AWAY REPORT #2 for IKV Astris
I (Qat?Iy K?olSoh?hn) attended all three days of the ConBust science fiction event at Smith College in Northampton, MA.
Friday, 20040402
I attended two interesting seminars on drawing and getting published as a science fiction writer. Authors Patricia C. Wrede and Lynn Flewelling presented the publication seminar. Dr. Mari Morimoto, a Japanese-born veterinarian and freelance anime translator also was present for the publication seminar.
That evening, I had the privilege of meeting Emma White, the president of the University of Massachusetts Sci-Fi Society. We talked for a while, and I gave her some IKV Astris brochures to take with her to her next meeting.
Saturday, 20040403
I had the opportunity to enjoy seeing the X-Men I and X-Men II films. It was a pleasure to see Patrick Stewart in action during that film! I also attended a creativity seminar.
Sunday, 20040404
Today, I wore my Classic Klingon outfit, featuring a new yellow sweater vest. In the morning, I watched some anime cartoons, since I never had the opportunity to watch any. I liked them. Seminars I attended included Women in Star Trek, Mars Wants Women (about role playing games) and a discussion about issues relating to the Sci-Fi Channel.
Best of all, I participated in the Cosplay event, which was the costume contest. In addition to wearing the costume, I had the opportunity to say and translate a few Klingon phrases. During the Cookies and Milk at the end of the convention, I learned that I won the prize for ?Best Use of Language?. A cheer went up when that was announced!
I spoke with Lauren Rizzo afterwards about doing a ?How to Speak Klingon? panel for next year?s ConBust, and she was delighted that I was willing and ready to offer that panel.
I met several people who expressed an interest in joining the IKV Astris during the last three days.
This convention was a success, and a fun time!
