Transmission Media
A medium (material) used to transmit data signal from one node to another node

1. Physical Transmission Media
2. Wireless Transmisson Media
 Physical Transmission Media
Use wire , cable and other tangible materials to send signals

Coaxial Cable

transmission

·  Consists of a single copper wire surrounded by insulating material, braided metal and plastic coating

·  Data signal pass through a coaxial cable as an electrical signal

  • usually used in Cable Television (CATV) network wiring

Twisted Pair Cable
transmission

·  Consists of one or more twisted copper wires

·  Data signal pass through a twisted pair cable as an electrical signal

·  Usually used in network cabling and telephone systems

Fiber Optic Cable

transmision

·  Consists of dozens or hundreds of thin strands of glass

·  Transmit data as pulses of light through tiny tubes of glass

·  Capable of carrying more signal than other wire cables and have faster data transmission

·  Costs more than twisted-pair or coaxial cable and can be difficult to install to modify

Wireless Transmission Media

Use air or space to send signals

Infrared

transmission

  • Send signals using infrared light waves
  • In  order to communicate to each other, infrared devices often be within  about 5 meter

Broadcast Radio

transmision
  • Distributes radio signals through the air over long distance such as between cities and short distances such as within an office
  • Bluetooth, Wifi and wimax communications technologies use broadcast radio signals

Cellular Radio

transmission

  • Is a form of broadcast radio that is used widely for mobile communications, specifically wireless modes and cell phones

Microwave

transmission
  • Provide a high-speed signal transmission
  • Microwave transmission, often called fixed wireless, involves sending signals from one microwave station to another station
  • Microwave can transmit data at rates up to 4,500 times faster than a dial-up modem
Satellite
transmission
  • A satellite is a space station that receives microwave signals from an earth-based station
  • amplifies the signals
  • Broadcast the signal back over a wide are to any number of earth-based station
