INDIAN INSTITUTE OF METALS, BOMBAY CHAPTER

REPORT OF ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED OVER THE YEAR 2003-2004

The events organized by the IIM Mumbai Chapter are as follows :

  1. Technical Lecture on New Advances in Ti Research, Development & Applications in Transportation Industry by Dr. K. S. Ravichandran, April 10, 2004

He spoke about evolving methods for low cost production of raw titanium for applications in energy automobile and consumer goods industries. He touched upon the developments on advanced material concepts like Ti in-situ composites and armour materials. He opined that India, by virtue of large Ti reserves would be a major force in production of Ti if the country invests wisely in research and  development to enhance the strategic advantage..

  1. Co-organised the Seminar on Heat treatment and Surface Engineering at VJTI, Matunga, January 12, 2004 (ASM-IIM)

The one day seminar saw enthusiastic participation from students, apart from the ASM and IIM members. The lectures delivered covered aspects of heat treatment of steel, various heat treatment processes like Liquid nitriding, laser surface modification, coating of tools etc., different means of heating, measurement of temperature, quality control etc.

  1. The Role of Material Scientist/Engineer in High Tech Electronic Industry, by Dr. N. B. Singh on December 15, 2003 (ASM-IIM)

Dr. N. B. Singh brought out the multifarious opportunities for materials science and engineering, in the form of developing new materials and processes.

  1. Bulk nanostructures in manufacturing, by Prof. Sudipta Seal, December 9, 2003

Prof. Sudipta Seal presented the overall scientific and technical approaches to engineer nanoparticles to understand the fundamentals of synthesis, surface modification, and characterization as well as strategic applications of these nanoparticles.

  1. Development of Shape memory Alloy Based Composites by Petr Sittner on Nov. 19, 2003

Prof. Sittner took an overview of the research on shape memory alloy composites and their applications.

  1. Technical meeting comprising of two lectures, one on  Intensive Quenching (by Dr. George E. Totten)  and the other on Criteria for the Selection of Surface Engineering Technique (Dr. M. K. Totlani) was held in Hotel Atithi on Monday, November 17, 2004.

  1. Brahm Prakash memorial Quiz, September 6th., 2003, Homi Bhabha Centre, Mumbai

The Brahm Prakash Memorial Quiz was conducted at the V.G. Kulkarni Auditorium of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education. Seventeen teams from various colleges all over Mumbai participated. The event was graced by the presence of faculty from IIT Bombay and researchers from the BARC.

The contest comprised of a preliminary round, (which was a written test) followed by the semifinal and final rounds. The questions were based on metals and materials. The four teams which reached the final were –

Father Agnel’s College, Vashi, Apeejay School, Nerul, Atomic Energy Junior College (AEJC), Tarapur and D. G. Ruparel College, Mahim. They were quizzed using various forms of media including audio-visual clippings. The team comprising of Manav pandey, Pratibha Tilak and Rohit Pandharipande all twelfth standar students from the AEJC, Tarapur emerged winners. The prizes were given away by Prof. B. P. Kashyap, Head, Department of Metallurgical Engg. and Materials Science, IIT Bombay. Participatio certificates were given to all participating teams.

  1. Computational Modelling – A path to understand the Science of Welding, by T. Debroy, Aug. 14, 2003

Prof. DebRoy brought out the shortcomings of empiricism in adjusting the welding variables, and demonstrated the effectiveness in visualizing the process using computer modeling of the welding process. He showed how numerical modeling of heat transfer, fluid flow and mass transfer could be used to study the effect of composition on the weld penetration. Prediction of macrostructure, grain structure, phase composition, phase structure etc. could be made accurate as well as user friendly through computer models.

The events saw enthusiastic participation from among the members of the IIM.
