Part nine
Creeping into the apartment he jumped as he
heard the sound of the shower get turned on. She was home. So far every time he
had come home she hadn’t been in, he had no clue where she was staying but she
didn’t come here during the nights and seemed to disappear during the day. A
week had passed since he had last seen her and for that he was grateful. Even
though nothing had really happened between himself and Kirsten he still felt
guilty for the thoughts of what he wanted to do with Kirsten. Jane was so
special to him and yet he was doing this to her? She had been the only one who
had seemed to see anything remotely special in him and had stayed with him
despite all the warnings from her family and up till now he had never let her
down. Sitting down on the leather chair he tried to think of what he was going
to do. The shower was turned off and she walked out of the bathroom dressed in
a bath towel, her long brown hair wild and dripping around her face. Sitting
down on his lap she kissed him and lightly bit his lip which was what she
always did. Looking at her face he noticed a cut just above her eyebrow that
was still bleeding. Raising his thumb he brushed the blood away and looked at
her.
“How did that happen?”
“For some information I had to get into a bit
of a fight with a werewolf. No problem, it’ll heal once I get something to
eat.”
“You do look pale… when was the time you
ate?”
“Yesterday morning. How about you? You’re not
looking too good.” She said looking concerned. Pushing his hair away from his
face she could smell something on him which she didn’t recognise… perfume. Not
ordinary perfume either… it was natural no synthetics, probably a witches.
“I… a few days ago. I’ve been busy.”
“Really? Doing what?” Jane asked whilst
trying to look interested. She knew he was going to lie to her and despite
trying to hide it, it hurt.
“Practising for my piano recital. It’s tough
to say the least. I just… it’s all very complicated.” Christian replied and
looked away, sitting there with her so close was unbearable. She meant so much
and yet so did Kirsten. Was it possible to love two people? No… true love only
comes once and he wasn’t even sure if he believed in love! Did vampires fall in
love? He knew they lusted… that was obvious but love… that was a different
matter.
“I would love to know what’s going on inside
that head of yours.” Jane stated and touched his forehead for effect.
“Not a lot… it’s a very boring place to be.
Anyway where have you been? I’ve been sleeping alone lately. I’m not sure if I like
it.” Christian tried to grin like his old self to try and stop her questioning
him but he had the feeling it came out as a grimace.
“I’ve been staying with a friend. We have a
plan that will blow your mind and it’s going to make us so rich and powerful
you will not believe it.”
“Really? I have a genius in my lap do I?”
“Yes and you’ll see how much of a genius I
really am quite soon.” Jane teased and then kissed him. Kissing her back he
found himself thinking about how he had only kissed Kirsten two hours ago and
how good it had felt. True this was nice but it couldn’t compare to Kirsten…
she was magical.
“Can’t you just show me now?”
“No… you’re part of my plan and I need to see
if it’ll work first. It should do.” Jane paused for a moment as if considering
whether to carry on. “I’ve been thinking about us a lot recently and I always
end up confused because I used to think I knew where I stood with you and now
I’m not so sure.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Well although we never actually said it
officially I always thought I was your girlfriend and I know the label isn’t
important but I took it. I thought you loved me and that you had eyes for no
one but me but now… I think we’re drifting apart.”
“I don ‘t think so Jane… we have been through
so much together and we have saved each others lives so many times that I don’t
think it’s possible for us to ever grow apart. I could never intentionally hurt
you and I don’t think you could do it to me.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure.”
“You would intentionally hurt me?” Christian
asked looking worried. In the position she was in she could pin him and seeing
as the table next to the chair was wood he started to a feel nervous. It
wouldn’t be the first time she tried to stake him…
“If you betrayed me yes. I’m positive you
would stake me without a second thought if I hurt someone you loved. Christian
you seem to think that I don’t know you as well as I do. I can tell how you’re
feeling even before I see you, you have been a part of my life for so long now,
that I’m not even sure where I end and you begin. You’re that much a part of me
and I know, I’ll never mean that much to you.” She loved playing with him, he
was so easy to manipulate. There were so many buttons she was dying to press so
that he would be completely in her hands that she felt like a small human child
in a candy store. She saw his face change as she spoke and knew that it was
working.
“You know I’m not good at that and you know
in my own way I do love you.”
“Are you sure about that Christian?”
“I’m very sure. I know it might not be true
mad love or whatever girls seem to like these days but what I offer is just
going to have to be good enough because that’s all you’ll get out of me. I’m
not built to be a romantic… I never have been.” What had brought all this up
with her? It was unusual for her to care so much about whether she loved him or
not. Her hair continued to drip on his shirt making a small wet patch as she
sat there looking so vulnerable. Of course she wasn’t vulnerable she was
actually quite deadly but every now and then he liked to believe that she was
just a normal girl… like Kirsten.
“I know but you do love me right?”
“Yes in my own way I do love you.”
“Would you die for me?”
“What?” Christian asked a little too quickly.
“Would you die for me.” Jane repeated. This
really was the test of all tests. His answer would determine her course of
action and in a way she hoped he would say no… she hadn’t had a massacre in a
while… then again even if he said yes he could be lying.
“Yes.” Christian said sternly. Although his
voice said yes in his eyes she could see that he was lying. What had happened
to make him turn away from her? It didn’t really matter now… she had organised
a blood bath and a blood bath was what she was going to have. She had always
wondered what witch blood tasted like…
~Only five more chapters to go and then
