Part Twelve
Still standing there just watching Christian
watching Jane who was watching both of them she felt herself grow dizzy. Maybe
it was the blood loss or maybe it was the realisation that she was going to
die. Jane would kill her whatever Christian decided so she might as well get
used to the idea. Breathing deeply she felt her ribs sting lightly as she had
bruised them earlier in the night when she had fallen to the floor. The coppery
smell of blood flooded her brain making her feel sick, ever since she was a
small child she had hated the smell and taste of blood and now as she was
drenched in it she felt like she would vomit.
“Tick tock Christian.” Jane sang.
“I’m bored. I’m going to go get something to
eat. Want me to get anything?” Phoenix said as he grabbed his jacket.
“No… I’m good thanks.” Jane said quickly.
“Because I can pick up anything, young, old,
guy, girl.” Phoenix offered again. Even though he had previously tortured
Kirsten he didn’t actually want to see her die. She had hurt him but she was
still special… there was something about her that he craved and if she died
there would be no one left who he even remotely cared about. Maybe if he
brought her back something good looking to eat then she would forget about it.
“Phoenix I said I wasn’t hungry now get
lost!” Jane growled. Instantly she realised what she had just said and to who
and shrouded away. Phoenix nodded to her to let her know she wasn’t in trouble
and then walked out leaving the three of them alone.
“How intimate, just the three of us. But soon
there will only be two, who’s it going to be?” Jane asked smiling at Christian.
“I wont let her die and I wont die either.
Jane just stop it, we can move on from this.”
“No we can’t! Don’t you see that? Everything
has changed! Christian just choose now before I get wound up and just kill the
both of you.” As Christian and Jane continued to speak Kirsten found herself
squirming on her chains, she had the biggest itch on her back and she couldn’t
scratch it because her hands were tied. Wishing she knew an incantation which
could magically make the itch disappear she sighed in despair as she knew there
wasn’t one.
“She has fire I’ll give her that. She’s
trying to break out of those chains even though there is no way she would ever
make it past me.” Jane said as if she was talking about the weather. Tightening
the shackles so that the circulation could only just make it through Jane stood
back in front of Christian.
“I wasn’t trying to break free… just… oh why
bother.”
“Christian I am tiring of this! Just pick!”
“I wont pick Jane, you know I wont.”
Christian continued to stare at her soberly. None of this seemed to phase him
which worried Kirsten. Was this normal for him?
“Fine.” Jane shouted and stepped closer to
Kirsten. “I’ll just kill her anyway!” She screamed and lunged for Kirsten’s
throat with the knife. Christian pulled a stake out of his pocket and staked
her before she could do anything. Jane turned to face Christian, her body
already starting to decompose. Tears ran down her eyes as she realised what was
going on.
“I…I…loved you. Why…couldn’t…you…just say it
once? I…I…can’t let you…have her…” With her last ounce of strength as Jane’s
body slowly turned mummified she stabbed Kirsten in the heart. Tears still
running down Jane’s face as she fell to the floor Christian cried out and
grabbed the chains and yanked them from the ceiling. Resting Kirsten in his
arms he started to cry.
“You’re going to be okay I promise.”
Christian said quietly as he pushed her hair out of her face. Smiling softly at
him she let her hand pull his shirt down gently to kiss her.
“I’m not… pass me the knife.” Kirsten said
between gasps. Christian was about to protest but then grabbed it anyway, not
wanting to disobey her as they both knew she was dying. Handing it to her he
felt her take his hand and then slash it with the knife. Placing his hand
against her chest wound and feeling their blood mingle again he couldn’t help
but laugh and cry at the same time. The feeling of her entire life force going
into him was such a high it was hard to contain and yet the reason he was
getting that high was so upsetting he didn’t want it anymore.
“I…lo-lo-love you.” Kirsten gasped.
“I love you too.” Leaning over he kissed her
again and then smiled at her.
“Do-don’t fo-for-forget me?” Tears ran down
Kirsten’s eyes as she felt herself dying. Whether the world would end because
of her death she didn’t know but she hoped it wouldn’t. She wished she could
live on with her soul mate as he was the only thing to make her feel truly
happy and yet the plainly obvious destroyed that dream.
“I never ever will.” Watching her breath
shallowly and then her eyes flutter and then the light fade out of her eyes.
Keeping his hand against her chest for a few moments longer he lifted her up into
his arms and started to carry her out of the room and hopefully to her home.
She deserved a true witch burial. Now as she lay dead in his arms, her blood
still soaking his shirt he wondered if he could go on without her…
