*Hey ya! -*-Chapter 10-*-

 

Time flew after that night and before she knew it Harriet was stood on the doorstep of Ben’s parents house. Ben was tightly holding her hand and Jack was stood next to them. Harriet looked up at the large house , she knew Ben’s parents weren’t short of money but their house was huge. Ben noticed Harriet looking at the house and was about to say something when the door opened and a girl with long blond hair appeared poking her head around the door.

“Ben!” she screamed running at her elder brother hugging him tightly.

“The one and only” he replied winking at her and returning the tight hug, Lucy giggled

“Whose that?” Lucy asked pointing towards Harriet

“Lucy don’t be so rude” her mother added appearing at the door. She was of a medium height with wavy dark hair, it seemed unreal how alike her facial features were to Bens. “I’m Anita” she said to Harriet, “It’s very nice to meet you” she added extending her hand

“Harriet” Harriet replied shaking her out stretched hand “It’s nice to meet you too”

“And who’s this then?” Anita added crouching down to Jacks level

“Jack” Jack replied timidly

“Very nice to meet you Jack”

“Hey ya mum” Ben said hugging his mum tightly

“Hello sweetheart, how are you, you look a little thin, are you eating ok, have you been brushing your teeth twice a day, and are you changing your underwear everyday too?” Jack let out a small giggle

“Yes mum I’m fine and I do all of those thing”

“Good then, we better get inside” she added ushering them all into the house.

 

About half an hour later everyone was sat in the garden of Bens parents house. Jack was playing football with Rupert and Harriet sat talking with Jeremy, Ben’s step dad, whilst Ben was helping his mum in the kitchen.

“Mum, you can’t tell me who I can and can’t see, I’m 20 years old, not 2”

“Exactly Ben, you’re 20, you don’t need to get into a relationship where a child is involved”

“Mum you’re being pathetic, you were a single mum for seven years, should you not be on Harriet’s side rather than against her?”

“Ben I do understand Harriet’s side, it’s just”

Ben cut her off mid sentence “No Mum you don’t, I love Harriet okay, and Jack, and no matter what you say I’m gonna keep seeing Harriet coz this is the one relationship I’ve been in that sex hasn’t mattered, we haven’t slept together yet but I still know I love her” he stormed out of the kitchen into the garden and went over to Harriet sitting down on the chair next to her.

“Hey babes” Ben said holding her hand

“You alright?” she asked

“Not really”

“What’s wrong?” she asked sweeping a stray strand of hair off of his face

“It doesn’t matter” he replied glumly

“It’s coz your mum doesn’t want you to see me any more isn’t it?” she asked

“Yeah” he said quietly, “It’s not fair she can be such a hypocrite sometimes, she should see your side, she’s been in your position”

“Ben” Jeremy said butting in

“Sorry” Ben said interrupting him “I know I shouldn’t be slagging off my mum, and I know she gave up so much for me when I was younger, it’s just”

“Ben, I agree with you okay your mum is being a hypocrite, but she loves you and she’s sticking to what she thinks is best for you because of that”

“I know” Ben said sighing “I know she does what she think is best, but what she thinks is best isn’t always what’s actually best”

“Ben, just let your mum cool off, I know I don’t know her, but I know you and I know that if she’s anything like you in less than 5 minutes she’ll be out here telling you how sorry she is and how much she loves you because she feels guilty”

“Yeah” Ben said pulling her into a tight hug, “I love you” Ben whispered in her ear. Harriet pulled away slightly,

“Really?” she asked, Ben nodded,

“More than you could ever know” She leant over and kissed him

“I love you too” she whispered in his ear, Ben smiled at her, he didn’t need to ask if she meant it, he could see it in her eyes, he wasn’t expecting her to say it back, he thought after all she’d been through in her relatively short life that she’d need to be with him longer to feel love, Ben simply leant towards her a placed a soft, loving kiss on her lips, sealing in the special moment they had just shared.

“Ben” Anita said from behind him. Ben turned round to face his mum “I’m sorry” she said simply, hugging her son tightly “I know you’re old enough to make your own decisions, I just worry about you”

“I know mum but…”

“I hadn’t finished yet, I can see you care about Harriet and I can see she cares about you so forget everything I said before ok, if you’re happy, I’m happy”

“Thank you mum”

“And Harriet” Anita said

“Yeah” she said looking at her

“I’d like to say sorry to you too, I shouldn’t have judged you on the bases of the fact that you were a single mum so young, I should be sympathising with you, I’ve been in your position and I know how hard it is to trust someone after being left to bring up a child alone, I’d really like it if we could be friends too” she added hugging Harriet. Harriet hugged her back

“I’d like that too” she replied
