A little about my favorite movies of 1971:

Harold and Maude: If there is an Ur-cult movie, this is it.

A Clockwork Orange: The book is really good too.

The Last Picture Show: The book of this is also very good.

Duel: Steven Spielberg's best movie.  It approaches German
expressionism in the way that he lets objects embody such
menace.

Fiddler on the Roof: A classic!

The Sorrow and the Pity: Probably too long for most people to
sit through, and not very good at explaining the complexities
of politics at the time, it explores French collaboration with
the Nazis during World War II.  Banned in France!

Johnny Got His Gun: They say it's not a very good movie, but
just wait until there's another draft and young men are coming
back from a senseless foreign war without their limbs, and then
talk to me about how good it is.  Actually, it isn't a very
good movie, but it tries.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks: This is definitely not a good movie,
but it's just so fun.

The Point: When I was eight, I thought this was the most
important movie ever made.  That's because we got to stop
all of our school work and watch it in class - it was THAT
important!  I mean, they never stopped class to make us watch
"Citizen Kane" did they.  It is a movie with a message: some
people have sharp-edged heads, and they are grumpy.

Equinox: A b-movie, or maybe even a c-movie, about some teens
who accidentally unleash a great evil.  As far as I know, this
was the first movie to have such a popular plot.
