IFSM 201 – Assignment One

You must use Microsoft Word to complete this paper. (Works is not Word).

Objectives of the assignment:

1.        Go to the UMUC library. You can find it at http://umuc.edu/library/library.shtml. Once there, chose Find Articles, Books, More: Articles and More. Go to Search by Subject and chose the link Information Systems. Go to Emerald Fulltext and Management Reviews. You will be brought to a login screen. Enter your last name and your social security number (without any dashes) and click the Login button. Enter a search term. This can be any computer topic that interests you. As an example, I entered Microsoft Office. I then chose one of the articles shown.

2.        Open Microsoft Word and type the words Homework One and press Enter (to add a blank line). (This paragraph will now be referred to as paragraph A)

3.        Copy two sentences of the article you found into your Word document (under the words Homework One). After you copy the sentences, you will cite the resulting paragraph in APA style. (This paragraph will now be referred to as paragraph B)

4.        Copy one paragraph of this article into a Word document. You will cite this paragraph in APA style. (This paragraph will now be referred to as paragraph C)

5.        Type a new paragraph below the copied one. In this paragraph, you will tell me what the paragraph says, using your own words. Again, cite this paragraph in APA style. That you put the words you read into your own words is called paraphrasing. If you directly quote or paraphrase, you must cite it in your document. Failing to do so becomes plagiarism. (This paragraph will now be referred to as paragraph D)

6.        Select paragraph A and change its alignment to center

7.        Go to paragraphs B and D in your paper and press Tab at the start of the first sentence of each paragraph.

8.        Select paragraphs B and D. To select these two non continuous paragraphs, first select the first paragraph by triple clicking or dragging and then press down the Control key while you select paragraph D.

9.        Go to Format, Paragraph to make sure that the alignment of the paragraphs is Left aligned.

10.    Change the format of the paragraphs to be Double spaced

11.    Deselect paragraphs B & D

12.    Select paragraph C. Go to Format, Paragraph to make sure that the alignment of the paragraph is Left aligned and Single spaced.

13.    Change the format of the paragraph to be Indented from the left and right 1/2 inch (0.5)

14.    You will add a table at the end of the four paragraphs. The table will have three columns and four rows.

15.    Select the first row of the table

16.    Choose Table, Merge Cells (to make a one column row)

17.    Insert a picture into this row by going to Insert, Picture.

If you wish to use clipart, then choose Clip Art and browse through the offerings.

If you wish to use a picture that is on your computer, then choose From File and find your picture.

18.    Once the picture is inserted into the row, click on the picture once. This will select it. You may then move or resize it as you wish.

19.    Type the data into the table. See my sample paper to see what words you will type in the table.

20.    Select the dates and change the alignment to center.

24.    Type the citation information for your article, letting your Word program page wrap as normal. After you are done typing the citation, press Enter once.

25.    Select the citation you just typed. Go to Format, Paragraph, click on the drop down arrow next to the choice Special and select Hanging. Click OK

Make sure that the citation is double spaced.

Format the title of the article to be in italics.

26.    Move to the top of the document (pressing Control & Home is a quick way to do this)

27.    Press Control & Enter. This will create a page break.

31.    Add a centered footer to your document that says IFSM 201

32.    On page 1, type the words Homework One, your full name, and the date, each on its own line.

33.    Select the three lines of text and chose Center Alignment (this aligns the text horizontally)

34.    Go to File, Page Setup, Layout tab.

35.    Change the Vertical Alignment to Center.  Apply to Selected Text (this aligns the text vertically)

Notes:

If you plan on using Word 2003, everything will match your book (even though the book is for 2002). If you plan on using Word 2007, you will have to find where things are on your own (sorry!). I do have the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack so I will be able to open your 2007 files.

All of the information you need to use Word to create this report can be found in the Word 2002 sections A, B, and C of your Beskeen book. If you have never used Word before, I suggest that you go through each of the tutorials before starting this project.
