Ypsilanti
Yetis PAN-AMERICAN CONFERENCE |
| Team History: | Owner Notes: | |
| In
their inaugural season, the Norman Gnomes had the worst record in IFFL
history. In 2000, they climbed into playoffs. The team then relocated
to Cedar Falls following the 2000 season, and were known as the Cedar
Falls Chihuahuas. Early in 2001, the Chihuahuas moved to St. Louis and
became the St. Louis Slugs. It was in St. Louis that the Slugs won the
Interstate Bowl. The team moved to Terre Haute for the 2003 season,
then moved to Minneapolis in 2005. The franchise took on their current
incarnation as the Ypsilanti Yetis during the 2006 season. Find their
annual team won-loss history here.

Nostalgia: The first draft choice in Ypsilanti (Norman) franchise history was Drew Bledsoe, QB. Hometown Notes: Ypsilanti, Michigan was chosen by Coach Ray to be the home of his franchise due largely to the town's fabled water tower. Built in 1890, the "Brick Dick" has been named the most phallic building in the world (even more than Knoxville's Sunsphere). Coach Ray felt that the tower would help symbolize the verile and manly spirit of the Yeti team. Yet Coach Ray seems wary of walking too close to the tower (read the link above closely to find out why). The history of Ypsilanti is equally mesmerizing, as noted in the link above--many important events have occurred. From the French trading post established in 1809, to John Norman Collins murdering 8 girls from 1967 to 1969, Ypsilanti is chock-full of historical interest. Coach
Ray feels very strongly about his team's mascot, the Yeti. Closely
related to the North American Sasquatch (or "Bigfoot"), the Yeti is a
native of the central Mongolian plateau. Coach Ray pushed for the new
mascot, as he felt it represented the free, mystical spirit of the
Ypsilanti environs. Coach Ray also appreciated the fact that the Yeti
was one of the few bipeds that had more body hair than he did. Some
studies indicate that the Yeti is actually a descendent of Gigantopithecus,
an ancient hominid species that is almost as closely related to
anatomically modern humans as Coach Ray himself.
