The Sedlec Ossuary is in the Kutna Hora, in the Czech Republic. It was built around 1400. A man by the name of Frantisek Rindt was hired (by the duke or prince of Shwartzenberg) as late as 1870 to decorate the chapel with approx. 40,000 sets of human bones that had been in the graveyard surrounding the Christian church. The coat of arms of the Shwartzenberg family was created with bones. The church is a Christain one,and most of the people that it is decorated with died of natural causes. The reason that the church is decorated with bones is to offer more people the chance to be burried on holy ground.
Our friend Alien recently went there and here are some of the pictures she took with her digital camera: |
