1.     How do we characterize a thermodynamic system ?

2.     How many thermodynamic properties of a system are required to describe its state?

3.     Is it possible to vary the pressure while energy and volume of a compressible substance are held constant ?

4.     Thermodynamics can be studied by adopting either a macroscopic or a microscopic approach. Distinguish between macroscopic and microscopic approaches.

5.     For a particular thermodynamic system, the following expression has been suggested for the differential of pressure(P)

     RdT              RT             2a

dP    =             -------    -  (   --------    -    --------   ) dv

     v-b              (v-b)2            v3

where T is the temperature, v is volume, a ,b and R are constants.

Judge whether the given differential is exact or not. If it is exact find the relation between P,v and T.

6.     If state equation is expressed in the form

P=RT/(v-b)-a/v2

find an expression for (∂v/∂T)p, and for the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient

ßp=(1/v) (∂v/∂T)p.

1.     Is the function 9x2y2dx+6x3ydy an exact or inexact differential? Prove or disprove by adopting oath integration.

2.     Consider the following inexact differential

qrev=Cv,o(T)dT+((RT/(v-b))dv,                              (A)

where Cv,o denotes the specific heat at constant volume, R the gas constant, and b a virial constant. Show that the differential is inexact. If Eq.(A) is throughout divided by T, is qrev/T an exact differential.

9.  What  is irreversible thermodynamics ?

10.  Distinguish between extensive and intensive properties with the help of an example ?

11. What criteria the system should satisfy for it to be in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium ?

12.State the thermodynamic definition of work ?

13.A balloon which is initially collapsed and flat is slowly filled with hydrogen at 100kPa so as to form it into a sphere of radius 1m. Determine the work done by the gas in the balloon during the filling process.

14.Is it possible to view the expansion of a gas in a piston-cylinder assembly as the one and only one effect external to the system ( the gas contained in the cylinder ) as the raising  of a mass against the gravitational force? If so device a means to view such an effect. Sketch your output.

     15.Is there a situation where dV=0 and yet dW0 ?

16.Explain the meaning of ‘Heat interaction’ or ‘Heat’.

17.State and explain the application of the first law of Thermodynamics.

18.Explain how the first law leads to the definition of internal energy as a property.

19.Describe a Perpetual motion machine of the first kind. Explain why it is impractical.

20.What are working fluids. Explain how the working fluids are classified ?
