Smoke + Mirrors

Do I hide myself from veiw
afraid the crowds will see what's true-
fearing they will know what I do
if this was your life, wouldn't you?

Wouldn't you flee from all the mobs
conceal your faults, hide your sobs
board up windows, steal doorknobs
play hide-and-seek like calvin and hobbes?

Somewhere out there I've been lost
my mind thrown out the window- tossed
away. Tears in my eyes- the cost
of living. I have been lost.

So i fashion myself a mask
pretty, witty, ready for any task
hope that no one dares to ask
who's that face behind the mask?

It's not me, and it can't feel
can't sense love, 'cause it's not real.

This false face- it does beguile
beautiful eyes, brilliant smile
strength enough to run a mile
wise, intelligent, all the while.

But if someone reaches out to touch
it'll evaporate- fall like a crutch
and show you me: such
a thing. I don't amount to much.

The mask's this castle's moat
so don't rock the boat
and on and on I'll float.

You'll try to recall but you'll forget
me, or how or where we met
you've won the bet
as I fade away into the sunset.
