Sipadan - one of the TEN BEST dive locations in the world, an incredible oceanic island formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct undersea volcano

Just off the southeast coast of Sabah lies the world-famous Sipadan Island - one of the TEN BEST dive locations in the world. An incredible oceanic island formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct undersea volcano, Sipadan rises 700m above the seabed.

Jacques Costeau, who visited the island in 1989, was amazed at the rich marine bio-diversity there. More than 3000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this richest of ecosystems. Sipadan is renowned for its large numbers of green and hawksbill turtles which gather there to mate and nest. Divers regularly see more then 70 turtles on each dive. Another unique attraction is the Turtle Cavern (also referred to as the Turtle Tomb). This underwater limestone cave, with a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers, contains the skeletal remains of turtle tribes that drowned after getting lost and disoriented!
