Angelo Suriano

I am 42 years old and I live in upstate NY. I am disabled due to a spinal cord injury that I recieved in an auto accident in 1986. I was told my doctors that I would never walk again. Over the years I have worked hard and I am now able to stand and walk with the use of one cane for a short period of time, and am able to take care of my house, yard, and field ... and of course, my dogs.

I have a dream of being the first spinal cord injured man to run the Iditarod dogsled race in Alaska in the year 2005. I hope to inspire people to live their dreams, and to prove that with a little hard work and lots of will anything can be achieved.

I have a team of 17 Siberian huskies that I work with every day. I've trained them to pull my wheelchair, plastic sleds, wheeled buggies, and the sled you see in the photo.

My hobbies and interests include: training dogs to pull dogsleds; listening to music; hunting and trapping; and spending time with my family and friends.

Originally from New Jersy, my family has been my biggest support over the years. My Mom and Dad still play a HUGE part in my life and are my BIGGEST supporters. I have made several friends in upstate NY who support my dreams, and there are local businesses and even a local university that have been very helpful too. I thank everyone who has come into my life.

I'm hoping to make two races this winter: the Sandwich Notch 60-mile (Feb 17 in New Hampshire); and the Can-Am 250 (March 3-6 in Maine). These are needed as preliminaries to qualify for the Iditarod. Sponsors to help me attain my goal are needed and very appreciated! To ensure a good race for my dogs, vet care (including shots), dog food, equipment (such as harnesses, reflective collars, booties, cable gang lines, etc.) are always a concern. Improved transportation for my dogs is also welcome. There are also still a few needs for personal equipment: a sportsman's bib, thermals, musher's mittens, snowshoes, and a 22" hand axe. Let me know if you'd like to help me climb the steps to the Iditarod.
