Selena's fan club president, salon owner, and friend, Yolanda Saldivar had been taking money from fans which was sent in for Selena merchandise. Abraham had found out by recieving complaints in fan mail and notified Selena immediately. At first Yolanda denied taking the money. She used it to buy a gun claiming to have it for the sole purpose of self defense. Yolanda later confessed to taking the money and agreed to pay it back. On March 16, 1995, Selena went to the hotel where Yolanda was staying to pick up the money. Selena entered the room and....... !*Bang*! Yolanda shot Selena in the shoulder. Another person in the hotel heard the gun shot and immediately called the police. When the cops arrived, they found Yolanda in her car with a gun to her head threatening to kill herself. As they tried to calm her down and get her out of the car, Selena was rushed to the nearest hospital and cared for. Selena's family was completely distraught. When the doctor informed them that Selena did not make it, they all burst into tears.
Yolanda was later arrested and sentenced to life in prison.
Selena's fans from all different countries, children, teenagers, parents, grandparents ...everyone, gathered holding pictures, posters, autographs...anything that was a reminder to them of this amazing young woman. All of them stood for hours and mourned the loss of their idle by candle-light.
