Brief Introduction
The Kulliyyah of Science, began
its operations in the year 2002. It offers studies in various pure and
applied branches of the natural sciences.
The Kulliyyah of Science will share with other kulliyyahs, one of the
most tastefully designed academic campuses in the world. The
architecture of IIUM’s campus is inspired by both Islamic traditions
and modern ideas of utility. The campus it occupies lie within a
forested area that is every nature lover’s dream.
Department
Presently, there are three
departments :
- Department of Biotechnology
- Department of Biomedical
Science
- Department of Computational
and Theoretical Sciences
In the second phase of its development, two more departments will be
established, namely :
- Department of Physical
Sciences
- Centre for Interdisciplinary
Studies
Facilities
The kulliyyah has the most up-to-date and comprehensive facilities and
equipment to cater to students' needs. The resource centre,
laboratories and workshop are tailored for all its different
requirements with advanced and specialised instruments to aid the
learning process.

Undergraduate Programmes
Bachelor of Biomedical
Science (BBiomedSc[Hons])
There are five areas of
concentration:
- Environmental Health
- Clinical and Pharmaceutical Research
- Tele-health
- Industrial Health
- Biomedical Diagnostic Technology.
This professional degree programme is IIUM's response to calls
for knowledgeable and skilled professionals in both the health and
medical sectors. It aims to produce highly trained and creative
biomedical scientists to fill the growing needs of society.
Career Opportunities
Opportunities are abundant in both the public and private
sectors. To give only the most obvious choices, graduates can find
executive or research positions in hospitals, clinical and
pharmaceutical companies, educational institutions, medical research
institutions, diagnostic laboratories, environmental health sectors,
telehealth services, quality control departments and production units.
- Bachelor of Biotechnology
There are five areas of concentration:
- Food
- Environmental Biotechnology
- Marine Biotechnology
Under this programme, students will study organisms, their
systems and parts and receive training in applying the knowledge thus
gained to the provision of goods, services and environmental
management. The training combines exposure to principles and
consideration of the rapidly emerging technologies in the biosciences,
placing emphasis on the manipulation of microorganisms and plants.
Career Opportunities
The multi-disciplinary nature of the degree provides a wide
scope for employment in science and engineering industries.
Opportunities can be found in the food industries, hospitals,
pharmaceutical companies, chemical companies, and organisations
requiring, for instance, environmental impact assessment officers. A
number of graduates may want to further their studies or research.
- Bachelor of Mathematical Science
Bachelor of
Mathematical Science (BMathSc)
Students may opt to concentrate on one of the following six
areas:
- Computational Mathematics
- Optics
- Operational Research
- Statistics
- Financial Mathematics
- Pure Mathematics
The degree programme in Mathematical
Science is aimed at developing versatile graduates who are able to
think critically and creatively in order to analyse situations,
organise information and devise solutions to complex problems at the
workplace.
Career Opportunities
The Mathematical Science degree is a versatile qualification.
The programme does not train students for specific jobs. Rather, it
teaches a wide range of skills that employers value. These include
clear and logical thinking, problem-solving skills and analytical and
organisational abilities. Accounting and actuarial firms, for
instance, do not always take in recruits according to degree
specifications, but on the strength of qualities such as those
mentioned above. Mathematics graduates are sought after by
organisations requiring personnel, who can solve complex problems,
design efficient systems or set up mathematical models for application
in such activities as weather and share market forecasting.
