The Moffatts taking a break

By KAREN BLISS -- Jam! Music

TORONTO -- The single and video for "Misery" will have to tide Canadian Moffatts fans over for the rest of the year. The Victoria, BC-born teen-pop sensations don't believe they'll tour again in this country until a new album is released.

"We've done so much that we feel like we could possibly over saturate the market and that's something we don't want to do because out of any country in the world, this is where we spend most of our time," 15-year-old bassist/vocalist Clint Moffatt said yesterday from a hotel room in Toronto following the video shoot for "Misery."

After the interview, he and his brothers -- Bob and Dave, also 15, and Clint, 16 -- were off to a screening of the new thriller The Blair Witch Project, a welcome break from all the work they've been doing.

The band recently rereleased its debut pop album, Chapter 1: A New Beginning, in the U.S. with four new songs and an enhanced CD portion. "We're going to be spending the next month in the U.S. doing radio shows with different pop rock bands," said keyboardist/vocalist Dave. "In September, we go to the U.K. and spend two weeks there and then come back to the U.S., then after about a month in the U.S. again, we go over to Europe and Asia in the fall."

The Moffatts have marked January through March, 2000, to make the follow-up to their million-plus worldwide seller. Los Angeles-based producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette's collaborator), who produced the four new additions to Chapter 1: A New Beginning, and co-wrote "Raining In My Mind", is slated to produce.

"We're going to spend a lot of time writing with a lot of really popular and crafted songwriters in the U.S. We don't know who yet, but we're in discussions with people right now," said Dave. "It's still going to be a pop rock album, but it's going to have rock sounds in it, alternative sounds. Whatever sound we want to put in there, I'm sure our producer Glen Ballard will be open to it and we'll be open to his ideas as well."

Meanwhile, "Misery" has also been confirmed to appear on the Teaching Mrs. Tingle soundtrack.
